Chapter Two: Resultant of Force Systems

Resultant: simplest force system which have same external effect of the original
system.

2.1 Resultant of Coplanar Concurrent Force System

In x-y plane, the resultant of coplanar concurrent force system where the lines of
action of all forces pass through a common point can be found by the following
formulas:

𝑅𝑥 = ∑ 𝐹𝑥 →+

𝑅𝑥 = 𝐹1𝑥 − 𝐹2𝑥 − 𝐹3𝑥 + 𝐹4𝑥

𝑅𝑦 = ∑ 𝐹𝑦 ↑+

𝑅𝑦 = 𝐹1𝑦 + 𝐹2𝑦 − 𝐹3𝑦 − 𝐹4𝑦

𝑅 = √𝑅𝑥 2 + 𝑅𝑦 2

𝑅𝑦
𝜃𝑥 = tan−1 ( )
𝑅𝑥

Chapter Two: Resultant of Force Systems ...................... Resultant of Coplanar Concurrent F. S.

Example No. 1: Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant forces
system shown in Figure.

Solution:

𝐹1𝑥 = 250 × sin 45 = 176.8 𝑁 →

𝐹1𝑦 = 250 × cos 45 = 176.8 𝑁 ↑

4
𝐹2𝑥 = 200 × = 160 𝑁 ←
5

3
𝐹2𝑦 = 200 × = 120 𝑁 ↑
5

𝐹3𝑥 = 400 𝑁 ←

𝐹3𝑦 = 0

→+ 𝑅𝑥 = ∑ 𝐹𝑥 = 176.8 − 160 − 400

𝑅𝑥 = −383.2 𝑁 = 383.2 𝑁 ←

↑+ 𝑅𝑦 = ∑ 𝐹𝑦 = 176.8 + 120 + 0 = 296.8 𝑁 ↑

𝑅 = √𝑅𝑥 2 + 𝑅𝑦 2 = √(383.2 )2 + (296.8)2 = 484.7 𝑁

𝑅𝑦 296.8
𝜃𝑥 = tan−1 ( ) = tan−1 ( ) = 37.8°
𝑅𝑥 383.2

Chapter Two: Resultant of Force Systems ...................... Resultant of Coplanar Concurrent F. S.

Example No. 2: Find the resultant force on the ring due to the three applied forces.

Solution:

→+ 𝑅𝑥 = ∑ 𝐹𝑥

𝑅𝑥 = 30 cos 37 − 50 cos 45 − 80 cos 60

𝑅𝑥 = −51.40 𝑁 = 51.40 𝑁 ←

↑+ 𝑅𝑦 = ∑ 𝐹𝑦

𝑅𝑦 = 30 sin 37 + 50 sin 45 − 80 sin 60

𝑅𝑦 = −15.87 𝑁 = 15.87 𝑁 ↓

𝑅 = √𝑅𝑥 2 + 𝑅𝑦 2 = √(51.40 )2 + (15.87)2

𝑅 = 53.79 𝑁

𝑅𝑦
𝜃𝑥 = tan−1 ( )

15.87
𝜃𝑥 = tan−1 ( ) = 17.16°

Chapter Two: Resultant of Force Systems ...................... Resultant of Coplanar Concurrent F. S.

Example No. 3: The resultant of the three forces is horizontal. Determine the
magnitude of the resultant.

Solution:

Since the resultant is horizontal, therefore:

𝑅𝑦 = 0, 𝑅 = 𝑅𝑥

𝑐 = √242 + 72 = 25

↑+ 𝑅𝑦 = ∑ 𝐹𝑦

7 12
0=𝑇× + 5200 × − 5150
25 13

∴ 𝑇 = 1250 𝑁

→+ 𝑅𝑥 = 𝑅 = ∑ 𝐹𝑥

24 5
𝑅 = −𝑇 × + 5200 ×
25 13

𝑅 = 800 𝑁 →
