CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS
Article I: Name of the Organization
Section 1: The name of this organization will be the ENGLISH CLUB
Article II: Purpose of the Organization
Section 1: Our primary purpose is to create an inviting and social atmosphere for students
majoring or minoring in English, as well as students who are interested in or considering English
as a major field of study.
Section 2: Our secondary purpose is to appeal to prospective students and other individuals who
show interest in the study of various aspects of English.
Article III: Membership
Section 1: Given the primary and secondary purposes of the organization, membership will not
be limited to English majors and/or minors.
Section 2: Membership is acquired by maintaining a desire to belong to the organization and
attendance of three English Club meetings.
Section 3: No discrimination on the basis of age, race, sex, sexual identity, creed, or religion will
exist within the organization.
Article IV: Officers
Section 1: Officers shall consist of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
Section 2: The offices of Secretary and Treasurer may be combined if the Club so chooses.
Section 3: The term of office is one year (12 month period).
Section 4: Elections will be held in January by the general membership.
Sub-Section A: If an officer is unable to fulfill his/her duties for the designated term, vacancies
shall be filled by a special election to be held at the next scheduled club meeting.
Article V: Executive Committee (Governing Board)
Section 1: The Executive Committee shall consist of the faculty advisor and the elected officers.
Section 2: Any minor business referred to the Executive Committee may be resolved through
simple discussion with the general membership and the reaching of a consensus (general
agreement) regarding the matter.
Section 3: Major business, or minor business where a consensus cannot be reached, is referred to
the Executive Committee where a majority vote will pass any business.
Sub-Section B: In the event of a tie vote, the faculty advisor will cast the deciding vote.
Article VI: Meetings
Section 1: Meetings shall be held every Friday.
Article VII: How to Amend the Constitution
Section 1: A notice of two weeks shall be given to the membership before voting to amend the
Constitution.
Section 2: The faculty advisor and at least three officers must be present.
Section 3: Amendments can be passed by a three-fourths (3/4) majority vote given that 50% of
the membership is in attendance at the meeting.
BY-LAWS
Article I: Membership
Section 1: Members are in good standing by attending one meeting a month.
Article II: Finance
Section 1: The president, treasurer, and faculty advisor will be in charge of finances.
Article III: Notice of Meetings
Section 1: The location and time of the next meeting will be announced at the end of the
preceding meeting.
Article IV: Elections
Section 1: Elections will be held in January on a Friday designated by the membership.
Section 2: A simple voice nomination suffices to offer a candidate for nomination for any
position. A consensus or majority vote will suffice to elect the nominated individual.
Section 3: A member is entitled to vote by having attended three meetings to obtain membership
and must have attended the previous English Club meeting prior to the vote.
Article V: Amendments
Section 1: These By-Laws may be amended in the same manner prescribed for the amendment of
the Constitution.
Article VI: Enacting Clause
Section 1: These by-laws shall become effective upon the approval of the Director of Student
Activities.
MATH CLUB
BY-LAWS
PREAMBLE
We, the members of The Math Club, do hereby establish this constitution in order to present our
ideas and realize our purpose to its fullest extent.
ARTICLE I. NAME
The name of the organization will be "The Math Club" and will hereafter be referred to as "The
Math Club."
ARTICLE II. PURPOSE
Section 1.
The Math Club is established for the purpose of fostering a greater understanding of
mathematics, encouraging undergraduate activity in math research and related mathematical
experiences, and providing a social and intellectual forum to all students interested in
experiencing math.
Section 2.
The Math Club understands and is committed to fulfilling its responsibilities of abiding by
University of Maryland, College Park policies.
ARTICLE III. AFFILIATIONS
Section 1.
The Math Club does not have any connection an external affiliate.
ARTICLE IV. MEMBERSHIP
Section 1.
All students, faculty, and staff associated with the University of Maryland are welcome to
become participating members of the Math Club. All members register with the officers of the
club to become participating members.
Section 2.
Members may voluntarily withdraw their membership by requesting their name be removed from
the registry. There are no established dues for the Math Club.
Section 3.
To get involved with the Math Club, prospective members can email the officers
at
[email protected] or come to any of the meetings. Anyone who comes to the club’s
meetings is considered a member of the Math Club.
Section 4.
Only current undergraduates at the University of Maryland are eligible to become voting
members and are automatically granted voting privileges upon registration with the officers.
Section 5.
The Math Club does not restrict membership or discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed,
sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, marital status, age, national origin, political
affiliation, physical or mental disability, religion, protected veteran status, genetic information,
personal appearance, or on the basis of rights secured by the First Amendment of the United
States Constitution. (For definitions of “personal appearance” and “sexual orientation,” see the
University’s Code of Human Relations.)
ARTICLE V. MEETINGS
Section 1.
Meetings are not required for membership of The Math Club.
Section 2.
Regular meetings will be held on a bi-weekly schedule during the Fall and Spring semesters and
any member of the Math Club is invited to attend these meetings. No regular meetings will be
held over the summer or the winter, but social and academic activities may still be arranged.
Section 3.
There is no quorum for meetings to be held.
ARTICLE VI. OFFICERS
Section 1.
There are four executive positions in the Math Club: President, Treasurer, and two Organization
Administrators. The President is responsible for presiding over the meetings, organizing problem
sets, arranging student and faculty talks, social activities, and other general organization and PR
responsibilities, including writing and updating the webpage. The treasurer is the designated
"SGA Liaison," and is otherwise responsible for managing the funds of the club. The
Organization Administrators are in charge of taking minutes at meetings, announcing events to
the members, and collaborating with the president on club activities. The faculty advisor will
assist in providing problem sets as well as instigating discussion at meetings. All executive
positions must be filled by undergraduates.
Section 2.
There are four officers will constitute an executive committee for the club.
Section 3.
If an officer does not complete his/her duties, he/she may be recommended for removal at an
official meeting, and then the voting party will be notified of the recommendation and his
position will be voted upon at the next regular meeting by any present voting member. The
officers of the club will take a vote, and a 2/3 majority is required to approve the removal of the
officer.
Section 4.
If there are vacancies among the Officers, and a vote will be held to fill the position. The
procedure for elections is described in more depth in Article VIII.
ARTICLE VII. ADVISOR
Section 1.
The advisor of The Math Club must be a faculty member of the Math Department at the
University of Maryland. The officers will ask the faculty member to serve as the advisor and the
faculty member will voluntarily agree to act as the advisor for the club.
Section 2.
The advisor of the Math Club will assist the officers in finding a room to host meetings and act
as a liaison to the Math Department administration and the club.
Section 3.
The faculty member will serve as the advisor for the Math Club at his/her leisure as long as they
are a faculty member at the University of Maryland.
ARTICLE VIII. ELECTIONS
Section 1.
Current undergraduates in good standing with the club at the University of Maryland are eligible
to become voting members and are automatically granted voting privileges upon registration
with the officers.
Section 2.
Nominations to office will be accepted from the voting party at the beginning of each election
and votes will be placed by secret ballot.
Section 3.
Current undergraduates in good standing with the club at the University of Maryland will be
eligible for office.
Section 4.
Elections will be held at the last official meeting of the spring semester of each school year and
will be in effect for the entire upcoming school year. Officers assume their responsibilities
immediately upon election. Members must be present to vote.
Section 5.
An officer can only hold one position at a time.
Section 6.
A simple majority from the general voting members is needed to elect an officer.
ARTICLE IX. FINANCES
Section 1.
There are no established dues for the Math Club.
Section 2.
The Math Club will not be applying for funds from SGA.
Section 3.
The Math Club will not be fundraising.
Section 4.
The Math Club will not be fundraising.
ARTICLE X. AMENDMENTS
Section 1.
Amendments to the constitution may be discussed and proposed by the executive officers.
Section 2.
Amendments to the constitution may be proposed any time during the Fall or Spring semester.
Section 3.
Proposed amendments will be announced to the voting party upon proposal, and put to vote at
the following regular meeting, to be voted upon only by present voting members. Voting and
participating members may voice concerns about the running of the club at will, at which point
the executives will discuss the concern with the faculty advisor and develop an amendment
proposal which will then be put to vote as described above. Amendments will be voted upon by
secret ballot.
ARTICLE XI. RATIFICATION
Section 1.
This constitution was last modified May 20, 2021.
ARTICLE XII. REGISTRATION RENEWAL
Section 1.
The Math Club will renew its registration with the Office of Campus Programs by June 9 of each
year, approximately four weeks after the last official meeting of the year, when officers are
elected for the upcoming school year.
