Title of work: Assessing Student's Performance in Mathematics in Tanzania: The Teacher's
perspective
Authors: Mzomwe et.al
Publisher: IINT ELECT J MATH ED
Type of book: Research article
Place and year of Publication: School of Educational Sciences and Psychology, University of
Eastern Finland, Joensuu, FINLAND (2020)

Topic: Student's Performance in Mathematics

Summary:
One of the aims of teaching and learning mathematics is to encourage and
enablelearners to become confident in using mathematics to analyze and solve practical
problems in real-life situations. However, while a few students prosper in learning of
mathematics, many students find it difficult and ultimately fail the subject.

Hypothesis:
Reveal higher failure rates in primary and secondary schools particularly lower secondary
school. Gender differences exist at all levels of education with girls underperforming in
primary, lower secondary, and college examinations due to cultural factors impacting female
students’ learning.

Methodology:
Reveal that majority of mathematics teachers and lecturers possess mixed emotions
towards student’s ability and the teaching-learning environment. Measures to improve the
situation suggested include; enhancement in teaching-learning environments, classroom
instructions, teaching skills, students learning skills, teacher training programs, attitude of the
community, and accountability.

Findings:
The results provide information about the trends of mathematics achievement and
associated factors for educators and other stakeholders to consider the implication in
curriculum and instructional practices of mathematics at all levels of education.

Errors/strengths and weaknesses of the literature/studies:

• Shows failure rates in mathematics examination results in the Primary School Leaving
Examination (PLSE) and Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) for five
consecutive years from 2008 to 2016
• Mathematics is not only important for acquiring academic qualifications, but also
prepares students for the future.
• Mathematics is given paramount importance in the curriculum and policies related to
education, right from pre-primary to tertiary levels. Mathematics is one of the core
subjects in both primary and secondary school curricula

Title of work: Students' skills in mathematical word problems and their reading comprehension
level: Basis for intervention program
Authors: Ma. Elaine Mirondo Valenzuela et.al
Publisher: International Journal of Science and Research Archive
Type: Journal Article
Place and year of Publication: College of Education, Laguna University, Santa Cruz, Laguna,
Philippines(2024)

Topic: Mathematical word problems; Reading comprehension level

Summary:
This study aims to investigate the relationship between reading comprehension and
solving mathematical word problems. Mathematics can be enjoyable yet challenging for many
students. Solving word problems is a common struggle. To solve these problems, students
must have strong reading comprehension skills to fully understand the mathematical
information presented in text form.

Hyphothesis:
The researchers created an intervention program in order to improve students' reading
comprehension level and problem-solving skills. The researchers came up with the
"CompreMath" intervention program.

Methodology:
The researchers were motivated to conduct the study to ascertain the level of the
students' reading comprehension and its impact on their performance in problem-solving.

Findings:
Results revealed a significant correlation between students' reading comprehension and
problem-solving skills at Don Manuel Rivera Memorial Integrated National High School. The
majority of the respondents were categorized as "instructional" and "beginner," with a mean of
18.88 and 10.48. Pearson r correlation analysis revealed that pupils’ reading comprehension
level is significantly correlated with their problem-solving skills.

Errors/strengths and weaknesses of the literature/studies:

• It is an essential skill for students to solve mathematical word problems, as students
must be able to comprehend those problems. Despite the importance of reading
comprehension, many students struggle with this skill, which can have a significant
impact on their academic performance as well.
• The study of mathematics was interesting and fun. However, many students struggle
greatly, and it can sometimes be confusing for them to solve mathematical problems.

comprehension and problem solving. A mathematical word problem. Mathematics may be
both enjoyable and hard for many students. Word issues are commonly solved. struggle,
Researchers developed an intervention program called "CompreMath" to enhance students'
reading comprehension and problem-solving abilities, the researchers were motivated to
conduct the study to understand the relationship between students' reading comprehension
skills and their ability to solve problems. They wanted to see how well students could
understand what they read and how this affected their problem-solving performance, the
study found a strong connection between students’ reading comprehension and problem-
solving abilities at Don Manuel Rivera Memorial Integrated National High School. Most
students were classified as either “instructional” or “beginner” in reading comprehension, with
average scores of 18.88 and 10.48 respectively, reading comprehension is crucial for solving
math word problems, but many students struggle with this skill, which can negatively impact
their academic performance. While math can be engaging, many students find it challenging,
especially when it comes to solving problems.
