Adverbs of frequency

We use adverbs of frequency with the present simple. They show us how often something
is done. They are the following:

Adverbs of frequency go before the main verb and after verb to be.

Examples:

1-He always goes to school late.

2-He often goes to school late.

3-They are usually happy.

4- She is sometimes grateful.

Note: We use (never) to indicate negative form.

Wh -QUESTION WORDS

{We use 'wh" question to ask about information.}

Who: We use “Who” to ask about people. ( Sam ,Sara, teacher, doctor, my father, aunt,
the students, the children )

Ex: Who is eating an apple? Ned is eating an apple.


What: We ask “What” to ask about things, animals, actions {v+ing}

(pen, cats, play, are cooking …) or if there is the word (time) in the question.

Ex: What time is it? It’s 2 o’clock Ex: What is he doing? He is eating.

Ex: What is Sam playing? Sam is playing football.

When: We use “When” to ask about time: days of the week, months of the year, hours,
seasons, years (9:00 am/ pm, Sunday, morning, spring, 2009 ….)

Ex: When do you go to the club? We go to the club on Fridays.

Ex: When is your birthday? In the first of September, 2000

Where: We use “Where” to ask about places. Prepositions (in, on, at+ place) (under,
above, behind, in front of, next to)

Ex: Where does Sarah work? Sarah works in an office.

Which: We use “Which” to choose one from a group: color, sizes or the word (one). (
red, medium, the tallest one)

Ex: Which dress do you like wearing? I like wearing my pink dress.

Ex: Which ring is yours? The smallest one is mine.

Whose: We use “Whose” to ask about the owner of something.

(Nouns, my, mine, yours …) person +’s (Mohamed’s, my father’s)


Ex: Whose bag is it? This is Maria’s bag.

Ex: Whose marker is this? This is my teacher’s marker.

Why : We use “Why” to ask about the reason of something.

(Because, to + v. (stem), reason)

Ex: Why are you sad? I am sad because I missed the bus.

How : We use ”How” to ask about:

1) The way of doing something. (On foot, by car, quickly, slowly

How old we use “How old” to ask about (Age)

How much:

we use “How much” to ask about Uncountable nouns and Price (tea, salt, pounds L.E,
dollars $)

Ex: How much is that jacket? Its 200 L.E

Ex: How much sugar do you want?


How many :

we use “How many” to ask about Countable nouns

(Pens, cars, sandwiches……)

Ex: How many rings do you have?

Ex: How many cans do you drink?

Asking questions

1. If you ask about the subject of the sentence, simply add the question word at the
beginning:

Example: James writes good poems. — Who writes good poems?

2.If you ask about the predicate of the sentence (the part of a sentence which contains the
verb and gives information about the subject), there are three options: If there is a
helping (auxiliary) verb that precedes the main verb ( for example: can, is, are, was, were,
will, would...), add the question word and invert the subject and the helping (auxiliary)
verb.

Examples: He can speak Chinese. What can he speak?

They are leaving tonight. — When are they leaving?

If you ask about the predicate and there is no helping (auxiliary) verb and the verb is "to
be", simply add the question word and invert the subject and the verb.

Example: The play is interesting. — How is the play?


If there is no helping (auxiliary) verb in the the predicate and the main verb is not "to be",
add the auxiliary "do" in the appropriate form.

Examples:

They go to the movies every Saturday. — Where do they go every Saturday?

He wakes up early. — When does he wake up?

They send letters. — What do they send?
