GEC 2023 SUBJECT ASSESSMENT

GRADE 9
NATIONAL TESTS
Introduction
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has developed Subject Assessment
Guidelines for the General Education Certificate (GEC). These guidelines have been
used to set the national papers in selected subjects. Tests have been set for the
following subjects and languages in 2023:
a. Economic and Management Sciences in English and Afrikaans (P2 only)
b. Home Language and First Additional Language in 11 languages
c. Mathematics in English and Afrikaans (P1 only)
d. Natural Sciences in English and Afrikaans
These Assessment Guidelines should be read in conjunction with the relevant Annual
Teaching Plans (ATPs), CAPS and the Programmes of Assessment.
The Subject Assessment Guidelines are intended to provide guidance on what to
expect in the tests that will be written by the sampled Grade 9 schools in 2023.
The tests have been designed to comprise 80% multiple-choice questions (MCQs)
and 20% open-ended questions. Guidelines on how to craft MCQs are detailed in the
document Test Specification Framework Development Process developed by the
DBE.
Schools are expected to administer and invigilate these tests in a controlled
environment as specified in the Conduct of Examination Guidelines.
The administrative period for these tests is as follows:
