Q.1 Write the chemical formula of Hardness (Both Temporary and Permanent)
producing compounds
Q.2 Why is Calgon conditioning better than Phosphate conditioning and Carbonate
conditioning?
Q.3 Is it possible to remove permanent hardness by either boiling or by adding lime
alone? Give reason to your answer.
Q.4 Why is Demineralisation process preferred over zeolite process for softening of hard
water for use in boilers?
Q.5 Give relationship between different units for expressing hardness in water.
Q.6 In the Demineralisation process, water is first passed through the cation exchanger
and then through the anion exchanger. Give reason.
Q.7 Alkalinity of water cannot be due to the simultaneous presence of OH-, CO32- and
HCO3- ions. Give reason.
Q.8 A water sample contains the following:
Ca(HCO3)2 = 162 mg/l Mg (HCO3)2 = 73 mg/l CaSO4 = 136 mg/l
MgSO4 = 120 mg/l NaCl = 117 mg/l Urea = 60 mg/l
Calculate Temporary, Permanent and Total Hardness in oFr.
Q.9 A sample of water contains the following:
Ca(HCO3)2 = 162 mg/l Mg (HCO3)2 = 146 mg/l CaSO4 = 136 mg/l
MgSO4 = 120 mg/l MgCl2 = 95 mg/l CaCl2 = 111 mg/l
CO2 = 44 mg/l KCl = 74.5 ppm
Calculate quantity of lime (90% pure) and soda (80% pure) required for softening 1
million litres (10 lakh litres) of hard water.
Q.10 0.14 g of CaCO3 was dissolved in HCl and the solution was made upto 500 ml with
distilled water. Later on separately, following observations were made:
(i) 100 ml of above solution required 28 ml of EDTA solution on titration.
(ii) 100 ml of hard water sample required 35 ml of the same EDTA solution on
titration.
(iii) 100 ml of same hard water sample after boiling required 10 ml of EDTA on
titration.
Calculate Temporary, Permanent and Total hardness of water sample.
Q.11 100 ml of water sample on titration with N/50 HCl required 4.5 ml of the acid to
Phenolphthalein end point. When a few drops of Methyl orange indicator are added
to the same solution and the titration is continued, the end point is reached after
the addition of another 10.7 ml of the acid solution. Determine type and the extent
of Alkalinity.
