INTRODUCTION

GAIL (Gas Authority of India Limited) has been a key player in setting up cross-country
natural gas pipelines under the "One Nation, One Grid" initiative. The concept aims to create
a unified gas pipeline network across India to ensure the efficient transport and distribution of
natural gas to different regions. This initiative promotes energy accessibility and helps
achieve a cleaner energy economy.

Key Details:
 Objective: The "One Nation, One Grid" initiative seeks to connect various regions
through a single gas grid, ensuring seamless transportation of natural gas. This grid enhances
energy security and supports the growth of industries by providing an uninterrupted and
affordable gas supply.

GAIL's Role: GAIL is India's largest natural gas company, operating a vast pipeline
network that stretches across the country. As a leader in the natural gas sector, GAIL has
been responsible for setting up a significant portion of the country's gas pipeline
infrastructure. The pipelines transport natural gas from production sources to industries,
power plants, refineries, fertilizer plants, and residential consumers.

Major Pipelines:
 Hazira-Vijaipur-Jagdishpur (HVJ) Pipeline: One of the earliest and longest pipelines,
serving as the backbone of the natural gas grid.
 Jagdishpur-Haldia & Bokaro-Dhamra Pipeline (JHBDPL): Known as the Pradhan
Mantri Urja Ganga project, this pipeline helps extend gas supplies to eastern and northeastern
India.
 Dahej-Vijaipur Pipeline: A key link for transporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) from
terminals to major consumers in North India.

 Kochi-Koottanad-Bangalore-Mangalore Pipeline (KKMBPL): This pipeline connects

the southern states of Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu
Benefits:
 Energy Efficiency: A unified gas grid reduces the cost of energy transportation and
lowers dependence on traditional fuels like coal and oil.

 Environmental Impact: Natural gas is a cleaner alternative to coal and oil, helping
India meet its environmental and climate goals.
 Regional Development: The grid supports the development of industries and cities in
underserved regions, helping with industrial growth and job creation.
