Chapter (1)
(1) Introduction
Fish forming in Myanmar started in 1953. The Ayeyarwaddy region is the region
with the largest production of commercial fish farming in Myanmar. Fish farming
is generally divided into 3 types: freshwater farming, freshwater fish farming and
mixed fish farming. They are modern fish farming techniques, whether in fresh
water or in salt water. It includes farming methods such as cage farming, cage
farming and liquid farming. The fish species that are currently successfully and
widely farmed in the freshwater waters of Myanmar are Sturgeon, Shwewah
Sturgeon, Tilapia, Catfish, etc. We raised Barbus fish and Rohu according to our
environment and market economy. Fish is mainly included in the body growth
group in the food replacement group that we eat every day. Fish is not only for
meat, but can also produce fish oil, fish amino acid, etc. Carp brings benefits to
the body. In addition to being rich in protein, fish also contains Omega-3 fatty
acids, which have many health benefits. Codfish oil can reduce the risk of
atherosclerosis and heart disease, remove bad fats from the blood, increase the
amount of good fats, and have health benefits such as controlling blood
pressure. Codfish oil is very helpful for brain health. In addition, vitamin A by
eating fish B complex D and calcium supplements are also available.

Page 1
(1.1)Objective
- To find out the rate of meat growth from the diet of Rohu fish and Barbus fish.
- To bring up the systematic commercial breeding of Rohu fish and Barbus fish.
- To allow fish farmers to share their business experiences.

Page 2
(1.2)Group Discussion
The group consulted on the topics to start PBL. The supervisor and the members discussed
how to work together in this PBL. In doing PBL, team leaders, financial managers, record
collectors, photo recorders and marketers where selected and assigned. Finally , it was
decided to test the change in the late of meat growth from the diet of the Rohu fish and the
Barbus fish. After that, there was a consultation on breeding by studying the growth rate and
reproduction rate of the Rohu fish and the Barbus fish.

(2) Literature review
Fish farming is a very profitable business. Not only fish farming, but manual fish farming is
also a viable business. Although the need for labor is low, the business can only be successful
if it can be affected by fatigue. Fish farming is a foreign investment industry. The fish farming
industry is not only a source of domestic food but also a source of foreign income because it
can be exported abroad. Not only does the fish industry count food, cod fish oil. We can also
produce sardine canisters and medical drugs. Based on fish farming, it can create
opportunities for basic workers. Fish is widely available in the market as it can be bought and
eaten not only by the middle class, regardless of race, religion, or regligio but also by the
production and sale of medicine from the fish, which is a beneficial business for mankind.
Currently, in the PBL farmed by their own people, Rohu fish and Barbus fish are the second
most produced fish species in the fish farming. Their growth rate is also among the
moderately growing species. At the feeding place, agro products such as bran and soybeans
are not only fed as the main food, and the growth rates of the fish are not significantly
affected by feeding these foods, so if you want to do commercial animal husbandry through
the husbandry is capital intensive, the benefits are much higher than other business, so it is
recommended to consider it as the first priority.

(2.1) Good information about fish species
Myanmar name- ငါးမြစ်ချင်း၊ ငါးခုံးမ
English name – Rohu, Barbus fish
Scientific name – Cabeo rohita, Puntius chola
Family name- Cyprinidae
In all parts of Myanmar, the Rohu fish and Barbus fish can be bred. Rohu fish can weight up to
3 kg and Barbus can weight up to 4 kg. In 2 years, the fish can lay 200,000 to 300,000 eggs.

(2.2) Selection of lake location

We got an empty plot of land near the pig from in the breeding department to raise fish. Fish
farming can be done in cages, ponds or in water. We opted for pond farming.

(i) Rohu
- The body of the fish is long and the tails stretched. It has two sets of short lips and a long
tail.
- The color is bluish or brown on the back and silvery on the sides and undersides.
- The fins are red or black.
- Fish can grow up 3 feet or more than 3 feet long.

(ii) Barbus fish

-The fins of the female Barbus fish are dark purple but the outer part of the tail fin is black.

-There are two mustaches on the upper jaw.

-Except for the head, the whole body is covered while silver scales.

-Abdomen shape is round.

(iii) Pangasius

-There is a small lump in the middle of the Pangasius’s lower jaw

-There is a short mustache between the lips

-The body is long and the tail is sleep

-Big scales

-The color of the Pangasius is a dull silver with a coppery yawn on the back

-The fin color is orange mixed with a little black

(iv)Catfish

-The color of catfish is reddish brown or dull back

-The color of the abdomen is slightly pale

-The head is flat and the body is round

-The tip of the tail is round

-Catfish have organs that can breathe oxygen from the air, so they can survive on land for
hours

(2.5) Tank drilling

We excavated a pond measuring 28 feet in length, 22 feet in width and 5 feet in depth in the
plot of land near the pig we received. Due to the rainy season in digging the fish pond, we
encountered many difficulties.

Page 8
(2.6) Tank preparation

-Irrigation was done with a water pump in the fish pond

-I added 6 bags of cow dung and 3 bags of lime to make the water clear

-We added the hyacinths to shade the fish

Chapter (3)

(3) Start raising fish

Two species of fish were bought and bred for PBL from the fish farm in the school of
Agriculture and Livestock Institute Tharyarwaddy. Five days after preparing the pond for fish
breeding, the purchased fish were added to the pond and raised.

(3.1) Feeding
When feeding Rohu and Barbus fish, they are fed a mixture of bran and bean paste. Food is
fed twice a day.

Page 9
(3.2) Pond exchange
As the lake is an earthen pond, it is difficult to produce irrigation water. The pond was
pumped once every two weeks. I added 2 bags of compost to the pond to provide nutrients.

(3.3) Marketing
I first studied fish prices at the Thonze town fish market near the school. The price of Rohu
fish is about 13,000 kyats per pound, the price of Barbus fish is 11,000 kyats per pound.

Chapter (4)
(4) Advantages and Disadvantages of fish farming

Advantages of fish farming

-Local food assistance
-Earning foreign income due to exports
-Abundant employment opportunities for workers due to the need for labor in the fish
farming industry
-Protecting fish species from extinction due to fish farming

Page 10
Disadvantages of fish farming
-A lot of capital
-Because of the use of many workers
-Land requirements
-Disease is easy to spread and not easy to control

(4.1) Diseases occurring in fish

Abdominal swelling, abscess, stomach pull, discoloration of the fin, hemorrhage, fungal
disease, skin ulceration, skin softening occur in fish. Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis (IPN) is the
most devastating disease in fish. However, no disease occurred in our fish.

(4.2) Cleaning the fish tank environment

To prevent trash in the fish tank, the fish tank was pulled and the grass around the tank was
cleared. Add about 3 limes every month, sprinkling plants to give the fish good ventilation.

Page 11
(4.3) Feeding rate
Rohu fish and Barbus fish are fed twice a day. For 3 months, 42 pounds of bran and soybeans
are fed at a rate of 0.35 viss per day.

(5) Conclusion

In conclusion, we have thoroughly studied and bred under the heading of “ Study on the
meat growth rate of the Rohu fish and Barbus fish”. We also systematized the pond
cleaning, fish health and feeding methods during the study and breeding. All the
supervisors and team members worked together to ensure that they could be exported to
the final market from breeding.
Page 14
(6) Suggestion

Fish farming can brin a lot of profit and since it can be mixed with rice farming, farmers
should also raise it to get additional income. Cow dung, which is a natural fertilizer, should
also be added to make the fish pond water clear and allow the animals to grow. When
choosing a fish tank, you should trees so that garbage does not fall into the tank.
