Head of the Department Message
It is with great pleasure that I welcome you on behalf of the
faculty, staff and students of the Department of
Architectural Engineering, at the University of Sharjah, to
this virtual exhibition celebrating the achievements of
senior students graduating 2022/2023. The Department of
Architectural Engineering, part of the College of
Engineering, is one of the largest and leading architectural
engineering departments in the United Arab Emirates

delivering a five-year degree program, Bachelor of Science in Architectural

Engineering. Our program is designed around the three cross-cutting themes of
sustainability, digital technologies and virtualization, and globalization.

By studying this program, our students combined the creativity and flair of
architectural, urban and building design with the technical knowledge and skills in
building technology, energy systems and environmental engineering. It, therefore,
equips our students with a wide range of skills and abilities with an interdisciplinary
attitude and appetite to solve real world problems. The program is accredited by the
Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), http://www.abet.org.
ABET accreditation provides assurance for our graduates that this program not only
meets the quality standards of the profession but also helps to prepare them for a
successful and rewarding career.
We are one of the most creative, innovative and diverse departments within the
University of Sharjah, attracting students from around the Gulf Countries, Middle East,
Africa and Asia seeking a high-quality and international education. The Department of
Architectural Engineering is unique in the diversity because of the diverse academic
and professional backgrounds of its faculty staff and academics.

We pride ourselves on our close working relationships with government bodies, the
community, the industry and professional institutions as well as international partners
across the globe. The Department of Architectural Engineering is committed to
instilling a global vision coupled with an understanding of a range of different
geographical and local cultural settings in our students. We strive to work
collaboratively with all our local, regional and international partners to develop the
enquiring and creative minds necessary for the leadership of tomorrow's local and
global built environments.

It gives me a great pleasure to share with you this virtual exhibition celebrating the
best of architecture, engineering and built environment work by our graduates.

“ Who has no past, has neither a present nor a future”

Sheikh Zayed said it one day, and it became an example, a wisdom and a popular saying on the lips
of people. Sheikh Zayed had a firm belief that civilization and wealth are not a reason for us to
abandon the traditions we believe in.
As we know UAE is a notable country that has great cultural values and raw resources,
This transformation caused UAE to gradually lose its cultural identity not being exposed well enough
to upcoming generations and to the tourists.
As a response to this dilemma, we propose to design a city within an Emirati heritage, but in a
modern and contemporary way in order to keep within the track of architectural and technological
developments.
Since the majority of the case studies have the problem of the lack of shading and ventilation, We
propose to design an adjustable shading elements that can close and open according to the climatic
condition. Moreover, we propose to develop the traditional brajeel element as now days the air
conditions are must in our country, so this element will not be useful as before, so it is needed to be
developed by a way that serve us. We created a method, which is to exploit the brajeel as a mist
system to cool the ( open spaces ) with the consider of following the narrow arcades to cool the

Sustainability and community planning

for Sharjah public library
Brief: We propose a new extension to the sharjah public library that have many new
functions that will enhance the learning experiance of the sharjah community as a
whole. The existing building (on the left) will have new functions to improve the
reading experiance of the visitors. the glazing will be protected from the harsh sun of
the UAE with new shading element that have twist to it, this shading element will also
be applied to the new extension. The design had a sustainable approach to reflect the
values of the sharjah residence. Our proposal offer a sustainable way to make the
library a community hub for the people of sharjah.

sustainable design strategies

the figure to the left shows how we considered the sustainable strategies in
our design. the performance of the existing building will be greatly improved
by the shading elements. the new light colors of the exterior surface will
reflect more sun rays. the new extension will be a sustainable addition to the
design. it will solve many problems that existed in the current building.
