Instagram

Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger noticed that smartphones were

increasingly being used to capture moments through photography, but
there wasn't a simple, easy-to-use platform for sharing these images in a
visually appealing way. The real opportunity lay in combining mobile
photography with social sharing, tapping into the desire for visual
communication.

Launched in 2010 after just 8 weeks of development, the app immediately

gained traction, signing up 25,000 users in the first 24 hours. This rapid
success came from a mix of simplicity, timing (as mobile photography was
on the rise), and effective promotion to designers and early influencers.

The core added value of Instagram was its simplicity and ease of use for
sharing photos with filters. These filters allowed users to enhance their
images, making even amateur photos look professional, which increased
user engagement and satisfaction.

SWOT

-Strengths: Easy-to-use interface, filters that enhanced photos, mobile-first approach.

- Weaknesses: Initial issues with scalability and handling rapid growth.
- Opportunities: Growing smartphone adoption, increasing social media usage, global
reach.
- Threats: Competitors with larger funding, changing user preferences, and the
possibility of user churn.

PESTLE

- Political: Minimal government regulation in the digital startup space at the time.
- Economic: Tech sector growth and investment availability, especially in Silicon
Valley.
- Social: Rapid adoption of smartphones, increased use of social media, and desire
for digital photo sharing.
- Technological: Improvements in smartphone camera quality, widespread internet
access, and the rise of app-based ecosystems.

4Ps

- Product: A mobile-first photo-sharing app with filters that allowed users to enhance
and share images.
- Price: Free app with later monetization through ads and partnerships.
- Place: Available globally through the App Store, with early adoption in tech hubs
like San Francisco.
- Promotion: Leveraged influencers and early adopters, including celebrities like
Snoop Dogg and President Obama, to build the buzz.
Instagram initially targeted tech-savvy early adopters in Silicon Valley and
expanded to a broader audience of young adults who were active on social
media and keen on sharing visually enhanced photos. Over time, the app's
ease of use and global reach attracted a much wider audience.

Burbn was an incremental innovation. It built on existing technologies

(mobile photography, social sharing) but introduced a user-friendly
interface and filters, which revolutionized how people shared visual
content.

In short, Instagram identified a growing trend, kept things simple, and

rapidly evolved based on user feedback, leading to their explosive
growth.
