A windmill is a structure that converts wind
power into rotational energy
by tradition specifically to mill grain
but nowadays it is generally used to generate
electricity and has a special name which is wind
turbine
when the winds come in contact with the blades of
wind turbine due to their arrangement it causes
rotational motion which is then transferred from a
shaft to the gear box located behind the turbines
Gearbox itself is a very interesting and a important
part of a modern day windmill it converts the low rpm
(rotations per minute) ,high torque from the shaft to a
high rpm and low torque and is transferred to the
generator
Gearbox also has a breaking systum which prevents
the windmill from damage in bad weather
Generator converts this mechanical energy into
alternating current,ac current which is low voltage but
high current and is fed to a step up transformer which
converts it into high voltage and low current
This electricity produced is then transferred to
domestic power stations that supply electricity to
homes and other buildings
Or this power is stored in batteries for future use
A windmill is the best source of renewable energy as it
is very efficient compare to for example a solar panel
windmills have 40% efficacy while solar panels are less
than 20% efficient
Unlike solar panel manufacturing wind turbine
manufacturing comparatively creates less pollution
Only downside of a windmill is it takes a lot of space
and the area of the turbines has to be big to achieve
those higher efficacies
