Systems
• What is a System? A system is a set of interrelated components, with
a clearly defined boundary, working together to achieve a common
set of objectives.
• Many examples of systems can be found in the physical (sun and its
planets, etc.) and biological sciences (respiratory, circulatory, etc.), in
modern technology (oil refinery, etc.), and in human society.
Systems cont…
• All the systems have:
a) Inputs, Outputs and Feedback mechanisms,
b) Maintain an internal steady-state, despite a changing external
environment, and
c) Have boundaries that are usually defined by the system observer.
Information Systems
• An information system (IS) can be any organized combination of
people, hardware, software, communications networks, data
resources, policies, and procedures that retrieves, stores, transforms,
and disseminates information in an organization.
Information Systems cont…
• People rely on modern information systems to communicate with one
another using a variety of physical devices (hardware), information
processing instructions and procedures (software), communications
channels (networks), and stored data (data resources).
Information Systems cont…
• Information systems vary according to the type of users who use the
system.
• A Business Information System is an information system that
evaluates, analyzes, and processes an organization's data to produce
meaningful and useful information based on which the Business can
take right decisions to ensure future growth of the organization.

• All the information systems use people,
hardware, software, data, and
network resources to perform input,
processing, output, storage, and
control activities that transform data
resources into information products.
