Destination: Hanoi

Introduction:

Ha Noi is the capital of VietNam, located on the banks of the Red River, is one of the most ancient
capitals in the world, where travellers can find well-preserved colonial buildings, ancient pagodas, and
unique museums within the city centre. It consists of 12 urban districts, 1 district-leveled town and 17
rural districts. Having such a good geographical location, the town has gradually expanded to become a
very populous and rich residential center. At different periods, Hanoi had been selected as the capital
city of Vietnam under the Northern domination. In the autumn of Canh Tuat lunar years (1010), Ly Thai
To, the founder of the Ly Dynasty (1010-1225), decided to transfer the capital from Hoa Lu to Dai La, and
so he re-capitalized it Thang Long (Soaring Dragon). The year 1010 then became a historical date for
Hanoi and for the whole country in general. For about a thousand years, the capital was called Thang
Long, then changing to Dong Do, Dong Kinh, and finally to Hanoi, in 1831. This sacred piece of land
thereafter continued to be the theater of many fateful events. This is a place where you can experience
its native cultures. In fact, it is easy to find traces of multiple cultures like Chinese, Southeast Asian, and
French in its roots. Visiting Hanoi can give you an opportunity to get a close glimpse of the distinct
culture, religion, goods, and flavor. (Khánh Linh 11a6)

Body:

You should first know that it is not possible to explore the entire city in a matter of days. But still, for
those who won’t be spending too much time in the exploration of this beautiful place, these selected
choices can be the best alternative. If you want to enjoy the famous Hanoi spots, then keep on noticing
our presentation. First and foremost, when u have a chance to go to HN, don’t forget to visit the
Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. Considered a relic of Vietnam’s intriguing history, this UNESCO World
Heritage Site has a height of 40 meters and its central flag is used as a symbol of Hanoi. On top of these
discoveries, archaeologists also found bronze coins, ceramics and pottery from China and many places in
Asia, all of which demonstrate a close trading relationship in the area. Visitors should head for the
display room that features interesting excavated items and mock-ups of the citadel itself. (Thu Thảo)

In the second place, now if you want to dive into Vietnamese culture, then the puppet show is a must.
Water puppetry is an ancient art form that has been part of Hanoi culture for a long time. Thang Long
Puppet Theater is the most popular theater of this town that organizes the puppet shows with its
traditional elegance. It is a famous Hanoi attraction, located in 57B, Dinh Tien Hoang Street, Hoan Kiem
District, Hanoi. Performances are accompanied by a Vietnamese orchestra playing traditional music
using drums, wooden bells, horns, bamboo flutes and cymbals. There are also authentic Vietnamese
operatic songs telling the story that is being acted out by the puppets. Most of the shows recount
Vietnamese folk tales and legends with topics including the celebration of the rice harvest depicted in a
humorous fashion. (Khánh Linh 10a2)

Thinking of exploring the historical architecture of Hanoi? Then the Perfume Pagoda is yet another
famous Hanoi spot you should see. The Perfume Pagoda, known locally as Chua Huong or ‘inner temple’,
is at the centre of a very revered and sacred site featuring a maze of mainly Buddhist temples built into
the limestone cliffs of Huong Tich. At the heart of this complex lies the Perfume Temple or Perfume
Pagoda in the Huong Tich Cave. It is believed that the first temple was built here in the 15th century,
although legend declares that the site was actually discovered over 2,000 years ago by a Buddhist monk
who was meditating nearby. The mountain foothills are an area of great natural and spiritual beauty
filled with streams, tropical plants and temples. (Khánh Linh 10a2)

When you look into the history from the perspective of locals, you will find Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum
might as well be the most interesting place of Hanoi. It is the final resting place of Ho Chi Minh, the most
iconic and popular leader of Vietnam, known to his people as ‘Uncle Ho’. His body is preserved here in a
glass case at the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in central Hanoi. Started in 1973, the construction of the
mausoleum was modeled on Lenin's mausoleum in Russia and was first open to the public in 1975. The
granite building meant a great deal for many locals as it ensures that their beloved leader ‘lives on
forever’. Security is tight and visitors should dress with respect (no shorts, sleeveless shirts and
miniskirts) and everyone has to deposit their bags and cameras before getting in. Visitors are not
allowed to stop and hold the constant queue up as the place is constantly busy. Uncle Ho’s remains are
sent yearly to Russia for maintenance therefore the mausoleum is closed usually from October onwards.
It’s best to recheck with your hotel tour desk before visiting. Admission is free but donations are
accepted. ( Phương Anh)
