PURPOSE

The purpose of this study guide is to provide extra explanation and content resources to help students taking
D197 Version Control at Western Governors University (WGU). The document is NOT intended to provide exact
answers or codes to students, but supplementary resources, tips, and course navigation for the required task.

GETTING STARTED
Make sure the required software is downloaded to your computer. I recommend downloading Version Control
first then Git following video links in Lesson 4.2 “Install and Configure Git”.

If you are new to Git and GitLab, the following two videos are good to watch to get familiar with Git.
- “Git Tutorial for Dummies” https://youtu.be/mJ-qvsxPHpY?si=b9npYPN_cbWG1QLY
- “Learn Git in 15 Minutes” https://youtu.be/USjZcfj8yxE?si=Lo2yQqxM3YVNCIH_

INTRODUCTION
Before starting your work, review the "GitLab How-To" web link. Then, use the "GitLab" link to obtain the
template. You will clone your GitLab repository to your computer to create a local repository. You will be
modifying your local repository using Git Bash (Windows users) or using the Mac terminal (macOS users).

Tips: The “GitLab” link will take you to your personalized GitLab account. You will need your WGU login to access it. The
“GitLab How-To'' link will provide steps to get your GitLab ready for use. Make use to follow ALL 12 steps. Links can be
found at the bottom of the task page, under the Rubric.
