ASSESSMENT TASK : Return Demonstration
Assessment
DONE NOT DONE REMARKS
Dimension
1. Verify the doctor’s order.
2. Observed principles of medical hand washing.
3. Gather materials and identify patient by asking his/her name
and checking his/her ID band politely.
4. Greet and explain procedure to the client clearly and
completely with client’s approval.
5. Position the patient comfortably and provide privacy during the
entire procedure.
6. Place the air compressor on a sturdy surface that will support
its weight.
7. Plug the cord from the compressor into a properly grounded
electrical outlet.
8. Carefully measure the medicine exactly as ordered. Use a
separate, clean measuring device for each medicine.
9. Remove the top part of the nebulizer cup.
10. Place the medicine inside the nebulizer cup.
11. Attach the top portion of the nebulizer cup and connect the
mouthpiece or face mask to the cup.
12. Connect the tubing to both the aerosol compressor and
nebulizer cup.
13. Turn on the compressor with the on/off switch. Once you turn
on the compressor, you should see a light mist coming from the
back of the tube opposite the mouthpiece as shown to the left.
14.1. If you are using a mask, position it comfortably and securely
on the client’s face.
14.2. If you are using a mouthpiece, place it in between the teeth
and seal lips around it.
15. Instruct the client to take slow deep breaths through their
mouth. If possible, hold each breath for 2-3 seconds before
breathing out. This allows the medication to settle into the
airways.
16. Continue the treatment until the medication is gone (about
7-10 minutes).
17. If the client becomes dizzy or feels “jittery”, stop the treatment
and rest for about 5 minutes. Then continue the treatment but try
to breathe more slowly. If these symptoms continue with future
treatments, inform the physician.
18. Turn the compressor off. Ask the client to take several deep
breaths and cough. Continue coughing and try to clear any
secretions that might have in the lungs. Cough out the secretions
into a tissue and dispose it properly.
19. Wash hands. Document the procedure.
OVERALL SCORE: ______________
Target Raw Score: 14 out of 19. If the raw score is less than 14, repeat the return demonstration.
