Travaux Pratiques d'Initiation à l'Informatique
[TP N°2 : Windows]
Aims: Manipulate graphical objects (icons, windows, etc.). Introduce basic Windows
applications: text editor. Learn how to manage files and folders.
I- First contact with Windows
When Windows starts up, the screen shows the desktop, containing various graphic symbols called icons, and a
taskbar.
II- Manipulating icons and windows
1. Using the mouse, position the pointer over the My Computer icon
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon, then, in the window thus opened, on the hard disk icon (D:)
3. Select and drag an icon inside this window.
4. Return it to its original position.
5. Minimize the window.
6. Open another window corresponding to the My Computer icon. Move it.
7. If this window doesn't take up the whole screen, enlarge it. Return it to its previous size.
8. Resize it (horizontally, vertically and globally).
9. Minimize it to the taskbar. Reopen it.
10. Without closing this last window, open another window (the one corresponding to the My Documents icon, which
should be on the desktop).
11. Alternate between the two windows. Observe title bars and taskbar
12. In the taskbar, click on a button corresponding to an inactive window. Observe the result
13. Place these three windows on the desktop so that they fill it without overlapping.
14. Close all three windows
III- Applications
An application is a program executed by the computer. Applications are designated by their names, and are usually
grouped together in folders known as "program groups". For example, the program group named "Accessories"
contains some basic applications: "Notepad" (text editor), "Paint" (for drawing), "Calculator", ...
1. Using Notepad
The aim is to create two files containing information about each of the students in the pair.
1.1. Launch Notepad Editor, located in the Start/Programs/Accessories menu.
1.2. Enter the following information about the first student in the pair:

Section:
Group:
NAME :
First name :
Date of birth: Address :
1.3. Save this data in a file named after the first student in the office (click on file in the menu bar, then item save. A
dialog box opens, with three input fields: choose Office in the In field, type your NAME in the name field, leave
the type field unchanged. Click on the Save button.)
1.4. Quit the program (file menu, quit item or click on the close window button).
1.5. Do the same to create the second file, which will contain information about the second student.
1.6. Locate the two icons on the desktop corresponding to the two files you've created.
2. Cut/Copy/Paste text
2.1. Open the file previously saved under the name of the second student (double-click on the file on the desktop).
2.2. Select the entire text (access the Edit menu, then the Select all item).
2.3. Copy the text to the clipboard (either via the Edit menu, then the Copy item, or via the context menu, or via the
keyboard shortcut Ctrl-c).
2.4. Open the file previously saved under the name of the first student.
2.5. Position the cursor just after the last word. Enter twice (to generate an empty line).
2.6. Paste the contents of the clipboard (either via the Edit then Paste menu, the context menu or the keyboard shortcut
Ctrl-v).
2.7. Select duplicate lines, then delete them (either via the Edit menu, then Delete, or via the context menu, or via the
keyboard shortcut Ctrl-x).
2.8. Save the file under the name of the pair, consisting of the names of the two students (File menu, then item
Save as).
2.9. Exit Notepad (File menu, then Exit item).
2.10. Locate the icon corresponding to the file you've created on your desktop.
IV- File and folder management
Perform the following operations using t h e Explorer menus, or try to make maximum use of the context menu (right
mouse button):
1. L a u n c h Windows Explorer (Programs/Windows Explorer)
2. Go to the root of volume D:
3. Check if the tree below exists, otherwise create it (FSMPSMC for Filières SMP/SMC or FSMISM
for Filières SMI/SM, and A_3_10 designates, for example, binomial no. 10 of the 3ème group in section A):
4. Go to the INFO1 folder, then to the WIN folder.
5. Position the mouse pointer in the window and right-click to access the context menu.
6. In the context menu, select New, then Folder
7. Rename this folder and call it TP2 (select the text New folder, type TP2 and press Enter), then open it.
8. Move the three previously created files from the desktop into the TP2 folder (Cut/Paste or Drag/Drop method).
9. Create the Travaux Pratiques folder under the WIN folder. Move TP2 to Travaux Pratiques.
10. Create the TP3 and TP4 folders in the Practical Work folder, then delete them.
11. Search for all text files (.txt extension) located in (D:)
12. In the view menu, click on Large icons, Small icons, List and Details. Observe the result.
13. Return the display to Large Icons mode.
