Experiment 3

To determine phase fraction and average carbon percentage in austenite during

heat treatment of dual phase steel

Introduction
Dual-phase (DP) steels are composed of ferrite and 5–20% of martensite, and their strength ranges
from 500 to 1200 MPa
• combination of high strength, good formability and low cost as well as high deformation
hardening
To determine phase fraction and average carbon percentage in austenite
during heat treatment of dual phase steel.
Step 1: Choose “diffusion demo” under Step 2: Choose package “Demo: Steels and Fe-alloys” in system
non equilibrium section of My project definer
and databases “FEDEMO” and “MFEDEMO”

Step 3: Choose Fe and C from periodic table

Step 3: Go to diffusion calculator, change length
to micrometer
Step 4: rename region as austenite
Width: 2000
Type: geometric
Ratio: 1.05
Phase: FCC_A1
Component : C : 0.2 to 0.2
Step 5: Thermal Profile
Temperature : 750 Celsius
Time : 10 hours
Step 6: Add region 2
Rename as ferrite
Width: 0.0001
Type: linear
Phase: BCC_A2
Step 7: Component C: 0.015 to 0.015
Step 8: X axis: Time hours
Y axis: Variable : position of interface
unit: micrometer
Limits: 2000 to 0 and step 250
Step 9: Perform
Step 10: Go to diffusion calculator and change time to
100 hours and continue
Step 11: Repeat for time 300 and 500

Step 12: Right click on diffusion calculator create

new successor plot renderer
Austenite F Austenite F Austenite F

Observation1: Kinetics is faster as temperature increased

Step 12: Go to plot renderer 2
X axis: distance (micrometer)
limits: 0 to 2000 step 200
Y axis: composition C : Mass percent
Time: Hours Values: 10 100 300 500
Step 13: Go to diffusion calculator click on discard and change temperature to 780 C and repeat for 10, 100,
300 and 500 hours
Step 14: Go to plot renderer and perform
Step 15: Repeat for 810 C

Observation 2: C percentage decreases in austenite as temperature increases due to faster rate of ferrite dissolution
To check the phase fraction of ferrite
