Read the passages and answer the questions below.
Passage 1
Fox and Crow
Fox was very hungry. It was early spring, and food was scarce. Hesearched
around a house where people lived, but there was no food. There was not
even a crumb on the table out back. So Fox headed north looking for food.

Soon, he found himself in a clearing where a tall tree grew. In the branches of the
tree was a crow. She held a piece of cheese in herbeak. Fox’s mouth watered.

“Oh, Crow!” Fox said in his nicest tone. “Will you share yourcheese with me?”

But Crow did not answer. She just looked at him and held thecheese in her
black beak.“Crow, you are a lovely bird,” Fox tried again.

Crow fluffed her black feathers but said nothing. Still, she held thecheese tightly
in her beak.

“Crow, I’ve heard that you have the most beautiful voice of allbirds,” clever
Fox said. “It’s too bad you won’t sing for me.”

Crow had always been proud of her voice, so she decided to singfor Fox. She
opened her beak with a squawk and dropped the cheese. Fox caught the
morsel before it hit the ground.

“Thank you, Crow!” Fox said, and he gobbled it down.

A base word is the simplest form of a word. You can form new words by adding the
endings -ed, -ing, -er, and -est to base words.

The spelling of some base words changes when you add an ending. For example,
you may have to drop the final e of base words that end in -e.

When you add an ending to a base word, the meaning of the word changes too.

• The ending -ed added to a verb means the action happened in the past.

• The ending -ing added to a verb means the action is happening now.

• The endings -er and -est can be added to compare two or more things.

• We often double the final consonant of a word (b, d, g, l, m, n, p, r, t) when a suffix

beginning with a vowel is added (-ed, -er, -est, -ing):

hop + -ed → hopped slim + -ing → slimming
