Fun with Magnets
Evaluate: Answer Key
A. Objective type questions.
1. Keeping the magnet in a refrigerator
2. All of these
3. Magnet
4. North-South direction
5. Both poles are of same strength:
6. Copper
7. Steel
B. Short answer type questions.
1. Each piece possesses its north and south pole and becomes a separate magnet.

direction of current.
3. Like poles of two magnets repel each other. Because of this property the bar magnet X will
experience repulsion and float above the iron plate
4. Attractive property: Unlike poles of magnets attract each other
Repulsive property: Like poles of magnets repel each other
Directive Property: A freely suspended magnet always points in north-south direction
5. There are two types of magnets, permanent magnets and temporary magnets. Temporary
magnets are useful as we can change their polarity and strength according to the requirement.
6. The magnets lost their strength because of self-demagnetisation. Self-demagnetisation happens
when po of a magnet are kept naked and free. Akshat's magnets would not have lost their strength if
he had used: magnetic keeper to store them.
C. Long answer type questions.
1. The process of making an artificial magnet is called magnetisation. Stroke method is utilised to
magnetise magnetic material using a magnetic material and a magnet. In this method we use one
pole of the mag and strike it gently on the magnetic material in one direction from one end to
another end and repeat this process for 20-25 times. Then magnetic material start behaving like a
magnet.
2. He will use an iron nail, an electric wire and a battery. The student will wind the wire around the
nail and t connect the ends of the wire to the two terminals of a battery. This will make an electric
current flow through the wire. The current will produce a magnetic field around the iron nail and it
will behave like a magnet
Yes, he can increase or decrease the strength of the electro-magnet by
i) Increasing or decreasing the amount of current in the electrical circuit
ii) Increasing or decreasing the number of coils around the iron nail.
3. It will always come to rest in the North-South direction. This is because earth behaves like a
magnet. The south pole of earth's magnetic field is known as Earth's north magnetic pole and north
pole of Earth's magnetic field is known as Earth's south magnetic pole.so, Earth's north Magnetic
pole will attract the magnet's south pole. At the same time Earth's South Magnetic pole will attract
the magnet's north pole and the magnet will align itself in the north south direction.
D. HOTS.
Scientists believe that the Earth's magnetic field is likely to be produced by electricity. Earth is made
up of several layers, the crust, the mantle, outer core and inner core. The molten metal flows
constantly and due to its constant flow, electricity is produced. The electricity thus generated
produces the Earth's magnetic field. This is also why the Earth's magnetic field shifts slowly over
time.
No, we cannot demagnetise the earth as it is impossible for human beings to make any change in
molten metal flowing in the core of the earth.
