- A power point would be flashed on the screen
- Would you all read the examples out loud?
- The dog that bit me ran away.
- I saw a dog at the park.
- Can anyone tell me which article was used in the first sentence?
- The first sentence uses definite article.
- Can you identify the article that was used in the first sentence?
- The definite article ‘the’ was used in the first sentence.
- Now what about the second one?
- The second sentence uses indefinite article, ma’am.
- Can you identify the article that was used in the second sentence?
- The indefinite article ‘a’ was used in the second sentence, ma’am
- So basically, an article is a type of adjective. Like adjectives, articles
modify nouns. English has three articles; the, a, and an. ‘The’ is used to
refer to specific or particular nouns. ‘A/an’ is used to modify non-specific
or non-particular nouns. We call ‘the’ definite article and ‘a/an’ indefinite
article
- Definite articles are used with singular and plural, countable and
uncountable nouns when both the speaker and the listener know the
thing or idea.
- Would you all please read the examples?
- The car that he drives is parked outside.
- The boy in yellow shirt was standing at the gate.
- We ate at the Mexican restaurant down the block last night.
- So here definite articles were used because they were talking about a
specific thing or a particular person.
- The car that he drives, the boy in yellow shirt, and the Mexican
restaurant. As you can see, these are all specific subjects.
- Let us now move on to indefinite articles. Indefinite articles on the other
hand, are used before a noun that is general or unspecified.
- Let us turn our previous examples of definite articles into indefinite
articles.
- For the first sentence, ‘the car that he drives’ is the specific subject. To
turn the sentence into indefinite, we will remove the identification of the
subject.
- A car is parked outside.
- Here, we generalized the subject. It is no longer identified as the car that
he drives. It’s simply just a car now. We don’t know whose car it is, we
don’t know what its color is, and we don’t know anything about it.
Therefore, we use the indefinite article ‘a’.
- Now for the second example, does anyone want to volunteer?
- A boy was standing at the gate.
- Now it is indefinite because the boy is unknown.
- How about the third one?
- We ate at a restaurant last night.
- Here we don’t know what kind of restaurant it is or where it is located
which is why we used the indefinite article ‘a’.
- Now class, do you know when to use indefinite articles a and an?
- The indefinite article ‘a’ is used before a singular noun beginning with a
consonant sound. While the indefinite article ‘an’ is used before a singular
noun beginning with a vowel sound.
C. Generalization
- How many articles are there in English again?
- Three.
- And what are those?
- The, a, and an.
- Which is the definite article?
- The is the definite article.
- And indefinite?
- A and an are the indefinite articles ma’am.
- Now can someone tell me which indefinite article is used before a
singular noun beginning with a consonant sound?
- The indefinite article a.
- What about the singular noun beginning with a vowel sound?
- The indefinite article ‘an’.
- To sum up our discussion, an article is a type of adjective that modifies
nouns. Definite articles are used when the subject is known, while
indefinite articles are used when the subject is unidentified.
- What is the relevance of our topic to our everyday life?
- When constructing a sentence, you must be precise with your choice of
words. Let’s say you’re meeting new people or visiting new places, the
last thing you want is to be misunderstood. Articles help clarify the
meaning of the noun in a sentence. It helps us to be clear and concise with
the message that we are trying to convey. Knowing the proper use of
articles will also help us to communicate confidently. The misuse of such
articles will make us sound informal, that’s why you need to have a firm
idea of how to structure your sentences.
