APPLICATION METHOD STATEMENT
Purpose
The purpose of this method statement is to describe the procedure for the safe paint
application of the products used in the system mentioned below to ensure Jotun quality
standards of application. These are only guidelines and adherence to these guidelines does
not relieve the applicator of the responsibility to ensure that the work meets specification
requirements.
Scope
This application method statement offers recommended practices for the use of the
products/systems and covers tools to be used, the methodology of surface preparation &
application, quality assurance procedures to be followed during application, personal
protective equipment to be used etc. for the application of the products used in the system
mentioned below. These guidelines are developed for the first time painting of the
respective paints systems directly on to the substrates. For advice on guidelines for
repainting over existing painted surfaces, contact Jotun technical team.
This document may not address all the health and safety concerns pertaining to individual
site conditions. It is the responsibility of the application team to establish appropriate health
and safety practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to the use.
Proposed System
1 coat PVA Primer
2 coats Stucco
2 coats Fenomastic Pure Colours Emulsion Matt
Product Description
Fenomastic Pure Colours Emulsion Matt is a superior quality emulsion paint, designed for
interior surfaces. Based on special acrylic copolymer emulsion. It offers good flow, hiding
power, in-can anti bacterial properties. Provides smooth durable and washable matt finish.
Free from harmful chemicals like APEO, formaldehyde, heavy Metals etc. Has very low VOC
which ensures good indoor air quality.
Substrate/General Requirements
A program and sequencing has to be done by the construction team for painting of the
different areas to ensure that structures can be coated in a continuous operation with
paint from the same batch.
The surface to be coated shall be in ready condition. All necessary repairs to the
substrate have to be completed well in advance of the painting to ensure repairs/filling
material have completely dried out/ cured.
The substrate shall be fully cured before starting any painting works.
The substrate should have enough strength to carryout painting works. The ideal
minimum compressive strength of the substrate is 15 N/mm 2 for good paint adhesion to
the substrate.
The substrate should be free from oil, grease and other chemical impurities.
No coating/painting works shall be undertaken until trials have been completed and site
samples are approved.
Areas/items that need protection adjacent to painting area shall be masked off.
The substrate should be completely dry before painting. A dry substrate normally will
have a pH value of 10 or less.
Note:
Substrates like spray plaster can be chalky and powdery if the right mixing and
application procedures for these materials are not followed, which can result in low
substrate strength. A substrate with low strength can cause adhesion problems to paints
and can cause failures eventually. Any such issues to be rectified before starting the
painting works.
Application of a solvent based penetrating primer like Jotun Penetrating Sealer can
reduce the effects of a chalky substrate and improve the strength of the substrate
moderately.
Painting Tools/Equipment
Wire brush, abrasive paper, carborundum stone etc.
Roller, brush, scraper/spatula/putty knife, spray equipment, paint tray, extension rod,
compressor etc.
WFT gauge, moisture meter, temperature gauge, humidity meter, pH meter/paper
Please observe the environmental and precautionary notices displayed on the container.
Also, refer the product safety data sheet for detailed information regarding health and
safety risks and precautions for the use of this product.
Quality Assurance
Ensure a dry, clean and sound substrate.
The substrate should have enough strength to carryout painting works. A scratch with a
metallic nail should not produce a deep impression on the substrate or a tape test on the
substrate should not cause deposition of substrate particles on the tape.
Measure moisture content in the substrate using a moisture meter and ensure that it is
below 10 % before starting painting.
Wet Film Thickness of the coating to be applied can be found out using this formula
WFT=DFT/Volume solids %.
Use WFT gauge to control the wet film thickness, if the WFT to be applied is more than
150 microns.
If the WFT to be applied is less than 150 microns, control thickness by calculating the
spreading rate for the required thickness using the formula.
Spreading rate in sq.m/L = 10 x volume solids/DFT
Ensure sufficient ventilation during and immediately after painting
Avoid painting if the substrate temperature is less than 10 0C and if the substrate
temperature is not more 3°C than the dew point temperature.
Avoid painting if the substrate temperature is above 45 0C.
Avoid painting if the relative humidity in the vicinity is above 80%.
Surface Preparation
Plastered surfaces/Concrete
Ensure that the plastered surface/Concrete is cured for at least 21 days.
If any contamination like oil, grease, chemicals etc. are found, remove it from the
substrate by employing proper degreasing methods like detergent wash followed by fresh
water wash.
If fungus/algae presence is noticed, use fungicide/biocide wash followed by fresh water
wash for areas affected with fungus, algae or similar growths.
Check the plaster/concrete for any cracks. If cracks are found on the plastered
surface/concrete, use appropriate cementitious/ acrylic/ epoxy filler compatible with the
selected paint system to fill the cracks before painting.
Remove all loose and foreign particles including dust, cement particles, corroded
material, efflorescence etc. from well cured and dry substrate manually with rubbing
stone, scrapper, abrasive paper etc. If required, wash the efflorescence affected area with
a mild acid followed by fresh water wash.
Before starting painting, ensure that all the dust and loose particles are removed using a
slightly wet cloth or an air jet and ensure that the substrate is fully dry.
Test the moisture content before the painting and ensure that it is below 10%.
If the plaster surface is not strong enough or chalky, use a solvent based
binding/penetrating sealer/primer.
Gypsum Plaster
Ensure that the gypsum plaster is cured as per the gypsum plaster
instructions.
Check the gypsum plaster for any cracks. If cracks are found, arrange rectification by
gypsum plaster contractor.
Lightly sand the entire surface to remove all loose and foreign particles including dust,
from the well cured and dry gypsum plaster surface using scrapper, abrasive paper etc.
Remove all the dust generated using a dry cloth or compressed air.
Ensure that the gypsum surface is completely dry and clean before painting.
If the surface is very chalky, ensure that all the powdery material is removed and a binding
sealer/primer is applied before the application of the paint system.
Ensure that the surface is free from all contaminations like oil, grease, chemicals etc. and
free from any microbial growth like fungus and algae.
Abrade the entire surface using scraper, abrasive paper etc.
Remove all the dust generated using a dry/ lightly wet cloth or compressed air.
Ensure that the surface is dry before starting paint application.
Gypsum Board
Ensure that the surface is free from all contaminations like oil, grease, chemicals etc. and
free from any microbial growth like fungus and algae.
Abrade the entire surface lightly using abrasive paper.
Remove all the dust generated using a dry cloth or compressed air.
Ensure that the surface is dry before starting paint application.
Fill joints between the boards using an appropriate filler and sand down to the level of
the boards (to be carried out by Gypsum board contractor).
Use a water based primer before applying topcoats
Pouring the contents of the CAN into an empty drum a few times will also produce a
homogeneous mix
Note:
Spreading rate may vary depending on the roughness and porosity of the substrate, type
of roller/brush used and application practice of the painter.
Refer TDS for drying time at other temperatures
Smoothening coats
Apply first coat of Stucco (may be diluted to a workable level (max 5%), with fresh water,
but not to extent of destroying the filling properties) using a putty knife/scraper at a
spreading rate between 4.0 sq.m/L to 6.0 sq.m/L and allow to dry for a period between 6
hours (40°C) and 8 hours (23°C).
After drying the first coat of Stucco, apply the second coat of Stucco as above.
After drying the second coat of Stucco, sand down the entire area to achieve a smooth
finish. Remove all the accumulated dust using a slightly wet cloth
Topcoats
Apply the first coat of Fenomastic Pure Colours Emulsion Matt in the desired colour, using
a medium nap cotton roller, at a spreading rate between 6.0 sq.m/L to 10.0 sq.m/L and
allow to dry for a period between 2 hours (40°C) and 6 hours (23°C). A dilution around 5
to 10 % with fresh water may be allowed for ease of application. Ensure that a good and
uniform finish is achieved.
After drying the first coat of Fenomastic Pure Colours Emulsion Matt, rectify the
imperfections if any, by touch up with Stucco, followed by sanding, and touch up with
Fenomastic Pure Colours Emulsion Matt.
Apply the second coat of Fenomastic Pure Colours Emulsion Matt as above.
Note:
Spreading rate may vary depending on the substrate, type of roller/brush used and
application practice of the painter.

material, efflorescence etc. from well cured and dry substrate manually with rubbing
stone, scrapper, abrasive paper etc. If required, wash the efflorescence affected area
with a mild acid followed by fresh water wash.
Employ water jetting/ mechanical grinding etc., if required, on concrete and other
hard substrates.
Before starting painting, ensure that all the dust and loose particles are removed using
a slightly wet cloth or an air jet and ensure that the substrate is fully dry.
Test the moisture content before the painting and ensure that it is below 10%.
If the plaster surface is not strong enough or chalky, use a solvent based
binding/penetrating sealer/primer.
Remove all loose and foreign particles including dust, cement particles, efflorescence
etc., if any, from well cured and dry substrate manually with rubbing stone, scrapper,
100-220 grits abrasive paper etc.
Before starting painting, ensure that all the dust and loose particles are removed using

Check for any minor cracks on GRC surface. If cracks are found, use appropriate
cementitious/acrylic/epoxy filler compatible with the selected paint system to fill the
cracks before painting.
Abrade the entire surface thoroughly using scraper, abrasive paper, stiff bristle brush
etc.
Employ water jetting/ mechanical grinding etc., if required.
Remove all the dust generated using a slightly wet cloth or air jet.
Ensure that the surface is dry before starting paint application. Test the moisture
content before the painting and ensure that it is below 10%.
hours (23°C). A dilution around 5 to 10 % with water may be allowed for ease of
application and penetration.
Note:
Spreading rate may vary depending on the roughness and porosity of the substrate,
type of roller/brush/spray equipment used and application practice of the painter.
Refer TDS for drying time at other temperatures
If any filling of pinholes/minor levelling is required, use an exterior grade filler like
Jotashield UltraBond Filler, Jotashield Ultrabond Plus Filler, Jotun Block Filler, Texo
Compound etc. After allowing the filler to dry completely, abrade the filled area
properly and make it to the same level as the rest of the area before starting topcoat
application.
If a non-Jotashield family filler (other than Jotashield UltraBond filler) is used, spot
priming with Jotashield Penetrating Primer on top of the filled area is recommended.
Texture Coat
Apply a coat of Texo Compound using a hopper spray gun to the required thickness to
achieve the desired texture pattern at a spreading rate depending on the thickness,
normally between 0.3 sq.m/L (2000 microns DFT) to 6.2 sq.m/L (100 microns DFT) and
allow to dry for a period between 1 day (40°C) and 3 days (23°C). A dilution of around
5 to 10% with fresh water may be allowed for ease of application and to get required
texture pattern. Ensure that a good and uniform finish is achieved.
The thickness and the pattern of the texture may be varied by adjusting the nozzle
pressure and by adjusting the distance between and gun and the substrate.
If a pressed pattern is required, roll the sprayed texture material with a plastic roller
dipped in Thinner No. 2 before the texture material starts drying.
If a smooth finish is required, Texo Compound can also be applied as scraper coat using
a trowel or putty knife to the required thickness to cover up the undulations on the
substrate. In such cases, the scraper coated area has to be sanded well and any dust
generated has to be removed.
Apply the second coat of Texo Compound as above.
Topcoats
Apply a coat of Jotashield ColourLast Mattin the approved colour, using a medium nap
cotton roller, at a spreading rate between 5.1 sq.m/L to 7.3 sq.m/L over the texture
coat and allow to dry for a period between 2 hours (40°C) and 6 hours (23°C). A dilution
of around 5 to 10% with fresh water may be allowed for ease of application. Ensure
that a good and uniform finish is achieved.
Apply the second coat of Jotashield ColourLast Mattas above.
Note:
Spreading rate may vary depending on the substrate, type of roller/brush/spray
equipment used and application practice of the painter.
Care should be taken to remove masking tape immediately after each coat, without
allowing the paint to dry.
Before application of each coat, ensure that all the dust on the previous coat is
removed.

The power floated concrete floor should be prepared by means of “captivated blasting” to
ensure removal of any laitance and other loose particles and to ensure a perfect bond for the
subsequent coating system.
If captive blasting method cannot be employed due to any reason, one of the following
methods of surface preparation must be adopted.
Grinding
Disc or stone grinder may be used.
Whichever surface preparation method is employed, ensure that the laitance (powdery
material on the concrete surface) and loose particles are removed from the concrete surface.
Also, see that the surface smoothness of the power floated concrete surface is removed and a
light surface profile is created to allow proper adhesion of the coating to the concrete surface.
After the surface preparation is completed, remove all the dust formed on
the surface an industrial vacuum machine. Vacuum cleaning is also recommended before the
start of each of the coat.
Coating should not be relied upon to improve the tolerance's or flatness levels in the
substrate. The substrate should be prepared to the appropriate tolerance prior to the
application of coating. Tolerance's can be corrected but this is a separate operation which
must be completed before installing the coating. Coating will generally follow the
contours of the substrate and have the same tolerance's as the substrate to which it is
applied. Applicators are advised to check the tolerances of the substrate before they
begin with the preparation.
