ASSIGNMENT 1&2
1. An alternating current, when passed through a resistor immersed in water for 5 minutes,
just raised the temperature of water to boiling point. When a direct current of 4 A was
passed through the same resistor under identical conditions, it took 8 minutes to boil the
water. Find the rms value of the alternating current.
2. Using relevant examples and illustrations, explain why electrical apparatus such as
generators and transformers are rated in VA (Apparent power) instead of watts.
3. Two impendances 𝑧1 = (10 + 𝑗5)Ω and 𝑧2 = (25 − 𝑗10)Ω are connected in parallel to a
100 V, 50 Hz supply. Find, Circuit admittance, Circuit current and Phase angle between
circuit current and the applied voltage.
4. A coil is connected in series with a non-inductive resistance of 30 Ω across 240 V, 50HZ
supply. The reading of a voltmeter across the coil is 180 V, and across the resistance is 130
.Calculate (i)Power absorbed by the coil (ii) Inductance of the coil (iii) Resistance of
the coil (iv) Power factor of the whole circuit
5. An industrial client in kenya is charged a penalty if the plant power factor drops below
0.85. The equivalent plant loads are as shown in figure 1.The frequency is 50Hz.
Figure 1
i. Determine the total real power and total reactive power for the plant
ii. Determine the value of capacitance (in microfarads) required to bring the power
factor up to 0.85.
iii. Determine the generator current before and after correction.
6. A capacitor C with an initial charge Vo is connected in series with a resistor R to a d.c
supply Vs. Show that the voltage across the capacitor during charging at any time t is given
by
−𝑡
𝑣𝑐 = 𝑉𝑠 + [𝑉𝑜 − 𝑉𝑠 ]𝑒 𝜏
7. The field winding of a 200V d.c. machine has a resistance of 20Ω and an inductance of
500mH. Calculate:
i. the time constant of the field winding
ii. the value of current flow one time constant after being connected to the supply
iii. the current flowing 50ms after the supply has been switched on
8. The nameplate of an electric motor has the following information
Line voltage: 220 V
Line current: 15 A rms
Line frequency: 60 Hz
Power : 2700 W.
Determine the power factor (lagging) of the motor. Find the value of the capacitance C that
must be connected across the motor to raise power factor to unity.
9. A series RLC circuit has an inductance of 200 µH, a capacitance of 300 ρF and a Q of 60.
Determinef_r, BW and upper and lower cut-off frequencies.
10. A 120 V rms 60 Hz source supplies two loads connected in parallel as shown in figure 2. Find
the (a) power factor of the parallel combination (b) Calculate the value of capacitance
connected in parallel that will raise the power factor to unity.
