Question 1. ( 2 × 5 = 10 )

a) Define measurement.

b) State two properties that our unit should have.

c) Fill in the blanks -

i) 1 MW = _______ W.

ii) 1 nanometre = _______ m.

d) State of rest and motion are relative. Justify with an example.

e) State two differences between scalars and vectors.

Question 2. ( 2×5=10)

a) State the equations of motion . Mention the meaning of the symbols used.

b) Can the displacement of a moving body be zero? Give one example.

c) Can velocity of a body be greater than its speed? Give one example.

d) Define retardation. State its SI unit.

e) Is acceleration a scalar or vector quantity? What is its direction?

a) State two properties common to all non contact forces.

b) State Newton's first law of motion.


c) On what factor does inertia of a body depend? Justify with an example.

d) Obtain the relation between the SI and CGS units of force.

e) Give an example of application of Newton's third law and identify the action and
reaction forces in your example.

a) State universal law of gravitation.

b) What do you mean by gravity? What is the value of 'G' ?

c) Athletes use spiked shoes. Give reason.

d) Deep sea divers have to wear special suits. Give reason.

e) State Archimedes principle.

Question 5. ( 3+3+4=10 )

a) Which device gives a more accurate measurement a vernier calipers or a screw


gauge and why?

b) Define time period and frequency of a simple pendulum. State the relation
between them.

c) Find the length of a seconds pendulum on the moon. Given the value of 'g' on
the earth is 10ms^-2 and on the moon it is one-sixth that on the earth.

Question 6. ( 3+3+4=10)

a) What is motion in one dimension? Why is it so called? Give one example.

b) Show uniform motion in i) a displacement time graph and ii) a velocity time
graph. What does the slope in each case represent?

c) A body with an initial velocity of 36 km/h accelerates uniformly at the rate of 18


cms^-2 over a distance of 200 m. Find the final velocity of the body in SI unit .
Question 7 . (3+3+4=10)

a) A body is kept suspended from a rigid support. Draw a diagram for the
arrangement and label the forces acting. Identify each force as contact or
noncontact force .

b) Obtain the relation F= m×a from Newton's second law of motion.

c) A body of mass 200 g moving with a speed of 30 m/s is brought to rest in 0.15 s.
Find -

i) the change in momentum of the body , ii) average retarding force applied on it.

Question 8. (3+3+4=10)

a) Obtain Newton's first law from the second law.

b) State the factors on which pressure at a point inside a fluid depends and state
how it depends on the factors mentioned.

c) A solid body is dropped in a fluid . State the conditions when the solid will i)
sink, ii) float fully immersed and iii) float partially immersed. State the apparent
weight of the body in each case .

Question 9 . (3+3+4=10)

a) A helium filled balloon rises upwards but stops rising further after reaching a
certain height. Give reasons.

b) Define relaive density. What is its unit? How can it be expressed from
Archimedes principle?

c) A piece of wood of volume 100 m^3 and density 0.84 g cm^-3 floats in a liquid
of density 1.05 g cm^-3.

i) What volume of the wood will remain above the surface of the liquid?

ii) What force must be exerted on the wood to keep it fully immersed?
