Advanced Monitoring Overview in SAP Solution Manager
Created by Stephan PRAT, last modified by Mathias Bley on Jul 11, 2017
Overview
Advanced Monitoring is used for all use cases in System Monitoring where the template approach does not help, as the configuration
differs largely between different Managed Objects.
For a specified Managed Object, Advanced Monitoring easily allows to:
Create several different Metric definitions
Simultaneously update different Metric values and thresholds
Test the Metrics by a direct call to the Data Provider on the Managed System
Create Incidents, Notifications, Third-Party Components, Auto Reactions for Alerting
Perform the Monitoring and Alerting Activation
Data are then automatically available in System Monitoring and Alerting Infrastructure.
The following use cases are already available:
Oracle Tablespace Monitoring
ABAP Transaction Monitoring
File System Monitoring
URL Availability Monitoring
Exception Monitoring (fully integrated in the Exception Management Configuration of Root Cause Analysis Workcenter):
ABAP Short Dumps
ABAP System Log
ABAP Update Errors
ABAP Application Log
Log File Monitoring (non-ABAP)
Starting Point
Transaction GPA_ADMIN (except for Exception Monitoring):
Type: Guided Procedure
Application Area: Advanced Monitoring Configuration
Features
Create several different Metric definitions
Simultaneously update different Metric values and thresholds

URL Monitoring
In URL Monitoring you can define a list of URLs which should be additionally monitored in aspect of a technical system. Typical use
cases are URLs for Web Dispatcher or 3rd party load balancers which need to be available to access a system. For the maintained
URLs you can check the availability and the https certificate of the URL. The following section describes how URL Monitoring can be
configured:
Open the Guided Procedure Catalog with transaction GPA_ADMIN or from the Fiori Launchpad (Section Guided Procedures ->
Guided Procedure Catalog)
Execute the Guided Procedure for URL Availability Monitoring
Choose Application Area "Advanced Monitoring Configuration"
Select the Guided Procedure "URL Availability Monitoring"
Click "Execute"
URL Availability Monitoring can only be configured which are enabled. Enabled systems have a flag in the column "Monitoring".
Perform the following steps to enable systems:
Select the system(s) you want to enable for URL Availability Monitoring in the table below.
Click on "Activate Monitoring"
Now you can configure the URLs you want to monitor on a technical system:
Select the system where the URL checks should be performed
Click the "Next" button (or select the step "2 Monitoring Configuration" on top)
Click on "Create"
Choose the key figure type. Possible options are
URL Availability: Checks if the URL is available
URL Certificate Check: Checks if the certificate is currently valid
URL Certificate Lifetime: Returns the number of remaining days until the certificate expires. It will provide a red rating if
the certificate is valid for less than 30 days.
Enter the URL to be monitored
Click "OK"
You can repeat this step to monitor multiple URLs or different key figures for a URL
Click "Save" after you have added all your metrics. This will activate the metrics and start data collection.
Example:
The results of the metrics can be seen in the System Monitoring application. Your system should now show a new entry "Additional
System URLs" in the System Availability category. If any of the configured metrics fails, this will trigger an alert for the technical
system in the Alert Inbox.
