Experiment No 09

Objective:
To investigate the performance characteristics of Centrifugal pump in parallel combination.

Experimental Setup:

3. Valve 2, V2 6. Pressure Gauge 3, P3
Theory:

1. Pump:
A pump is a machine or device that is used to force a liquid or gas to flow in a direction.
Pumps operate by some mechanism (typically reciprocating or rotary) and consume energy to
perform mechanical work moving the fluid. Pumps operate via many energy sources, including
manual operation, electricity, engines, or wind power, come in many sizes, from microscopic for
use in medical applications to large industrial pumps.
1.1.Parallel Operation of centrifugal Pump:
Pumps are operated in parallel when two or more pumps are connected to a common
discharge line and share the same suction conditions.

Some things to consider when pumps are operated in parallel:

 Both pumps must produce the same head this usually means they must be running at the
same speed, with the same diameter impeller.
 Two pumps in parallel will deliver less than twice the flow rate of a single pump in the
system because of the increased friction in the piping.
 The shape of the system curve determines the actual increase in capacity. If there is
additional friction in the system from throttling (see dotted line in the following diagram),
two pumps in parallel may deliver only slightly more than a single pump operating by its
self.

1.2.Demonstration of Pump in Parallel:

1.3.Advantage of Parallel pumps:

 Centrifugal pumps in series are used to overcome larger volume flows than one pump can
handle alone.
 Used for high flow rate at the same head.
Experimental Procedure:
1. Set the pump demonstrator for parallel operation.
2. To Set pumps in parallel close the valve 2 (V2) and fully open the Valves 1 & 3
(V1&V3).
3. Turn on pump 1 and pump 2.
4. Measure the inlet pressure p1, the pump outlet pressure p2 and p3 and the volume
flow V.
5. Reduce the volume flow a bit by gradually closing valve 5 (V5) and take the
measurements according to point 4.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the volume flow is completely throttled.
