Child labour
Child labour is a pervasive issue that continues to
plague many parts of the world. According to the
International Labour
Organization (ILO), there are
an estimated 152 million
children engaged in child
labour globally, with the
majority of them in
developing countries. This
problem is not confined to a single region or
country, but is a global phenomenon that requires
immediate attention and action. In the story "Lost
Spring" by Anees Jung, the author presents a
poignant portrayal of child labour in the context
of poverty and social inequality in India.
Child Labour in reference to context of
Lost Spring
"Lost Spring" highlights the
harsh reality of child labour
in India, where many
children are forced to work
in order to support their
families. The story revolves
around the lives of children who are engaged in various
forms of labour, such as rag-picking, brassware work,
and glasswork. These children are deprived of their
right to education and are
subjected to hazardous
working conditions, all in the
pursuit of meagre wages that
barely sustain their families.
Anees Jung vividly portrays the dismal circumstances in
which these children are trapped, and the impact it has
on their physical, emotional and psychological well-
being. The author beautifully captures the innocence
and resilience of these
children, despite their harsh
circumstances. Poverty, lack
of access to education, and a
dearth of employment
opportunities are some of the
root causes that drive
families to make their children work. The social
hierarchy and caste system prevalent in India also
contribute to the cycle of poverty and exploitation. In
"Lost Spring," Anees Jung also sheds light on the
pervasive nature of child labour and the indifference of
society towards it. The story highlights the exploitation
of children by employers and the apathy of
government agencies towards enforcing child labour
laws. The issue of child labour is a moral and ethical
dilemma that calls for urgent action and collective
responsibility. Governments, non-governmental
organizations, and civil society must work together to
address the root causes of child labour and create
sustainable solutions. Efforts should focus on
eradicating poverty, improving access to education,
and enforcing strict laws to prevent the exploitation of
children. Furthermore, creating awareness and
advocating for the rights of these children is crucial in
bringing about systemic
change. In conclusion,
"Lost Spring" serves as a
poignant reminder of
the harsh realities faced
by millions of children
trapped in the
cycle of child labour. Anees Jung's storytelling
beautifully captures the struggles and aspirations of
these children, while also highlighting the need for
societal and policy changes to end child labour. It is
imperative for us to recognize that these children are
the future of our society and that every child deserves
the right to a happy and fulfilling childhood, free from
the burden of
labour. Only
through
collective efforts
and a united
resolve can we
bring an end to
the scourge of child labour and create a better future
for the next generation.
