Although playing video games is one of the most popular leisure activities in the world, research
into its effects on players, (40)_____, is often trivialised.
One innovative application of video games in health care is (41)_____. The degree of attention
needed to play such a game can distract the player from the sensation of pain, a strategy that has been
reported and evaluated among paediatric patients. (42)_____ a form of physiotherapy or occupational
therapy in many different groups of people. Such games focus attention away from potential discomfort
and, unlike more traditional therapeutic activities, they do not rely on passive movements and sometimes
painful manipulation of the limbs.
However, there has been no long term follow-up and no robust randomised controlled trials of
such interventions. (43)_____. Furthermore, it is not known whether any distracting effect depends
simply on concentrating on an interactive task or whether the content of games is also an important
factor as there have been no controlled trials (44)_____. Further research should examine factors within
games such as novelty, users' preferences, and relative levels of challenge and should compare video
games with other potentially distracting activities.
On balance, given that video game playing is highly prevalent among children and adolescents in
industrialised countries, (45)_____ moderate frequency of play has serious acute adverse effects from
moderate play. Adverse effects, when they occur, tend to be relatively minor and temporary, resolving
spontaneously with decreased frequency of play. More evidence is needed on excessive play and on

By the time Hurricane Sandy veered toward the northeast coast of the United States on October
29, 2012, it had mauled several countries in the Caribbean and left dozens dead. Faced with the largest
storm the Atlantic had ever produced, New York and other cities ordered mandatory evacuations of low-
lying areas.
By the end of the century, a hundred-year storm surge like Sandy’s might occur every decade or
less. Coastal cities like New York now face a double threat: rising oceans and more severe storm surges.
Experts estimate that by 2070, 150 million people in the world’s large port cities will be at risk from
coastal flooding, along with 35 trillion dollars in property. How will they cope?
Malcolm Bowman, a researcher at the State University of New York, believes that storm-surge
barriers must be built across New York City’s harbor. Compared with some other leading ports, New
York is essentially defenseless in the face of hurricanes and floods. London, Rotterdam, St. Persburg,
New Orleans, and Shanghai have all built levees and storm barriers in the past few decades. When
Hurricane Sandy struck, New York paid a high price for not having such protection. According to
Bowman, storm surge barriers could have prevented it. He says, “It might take five years of study and
another ten years to get the political will to do it. By then, there might have been another disaster. We
need to start planning immediately.”
6
With the threat of sea-level rise everywhere, cities around the world have turned to the
Netherlands for guidance-a country that has faced and overcome the problem of rising seas. One Dutch
firm, Arcadis, has prepared a design for a storm-surge barrier to protect New York City. The same
company helped design a 3.2-kilometer- (two-mile-) long barrier that protected New Orleans from
Humcane Isaac’s four-meter (13.6-foot) storm surge in 2012. “Isaac was a tremendous victory for New
Orleans,” said Piet Dircke, an Arcadis executive. “All the barriers were closed; all the levees held; all the
pumps worked. You didn’t hear about it? No, because nothing happened.”
New Orleans may be safe for a few decades, but the long-term prospect for it and low-lying cities
look dire. Unless we change course dramatically, our carbon emissions will drastically change the
geography of many shorelines by the next century, if not sooner, and large numbers of people will have
to abandon coastal areas in Florida and other parts of the world.

Henry is the undisputed star of Dronfield School near Sheffield. Whatever the achievements of
other members of the comprehensive school, it is Henry, with his soulful eyes and glossy hair, who has
hogged the limelight, appearing on television in Britain and abroad. Yet despite all the public adulation,
Henry stirs up no envy or resentment among the 2000 students – in fact, they all adore him.
The dog, who first arrived six months ago, is a super dog, who has improved students' behaviour and
encouraged more students to focus on their academic achievement.
It was Andrew's teacher, Wendy Brown and the school counselor, Julie Smart, who first proposed
buying a school dog. "Julie and I were talking one day about how looking after dogs can positively affect
children's conduct," says Brown. "We did some research and discovered that the presence of pets has
been shown to be therapeutic. A number of studies have shown that animals improve recovery after
7
surgery or illness and have a calming influence on people in a lot of settings. Some of my kids can be a
handful and some of the children Julie counsels have terrible problems."
Could the school dog become a craze? Other schools such as the Mulberry Bush, a primary school for
children with behavioural problems, have stepped forward to point out they already have one. Rosie
Johnston, a Mulberry staff member has been bringing her golden retriever, Muskoka, into school for
three years. Apart from being a calming influence, Muskoka even plays his part in literacy lessons.
Children at the school can be too shy to read to adults so they read to Muskoka. "Their anxiety about
mispronouncing something or getting the words in the wrong order is reduced when they read to him,"
says Johnston.
Psychologist Dr Deborah Wells from Queen's University Belfast specialises in animal-human
interaction. She believes that the underlying key to the Henry effect is that dogs offer unconditional love
and that cheers up adults and children and helps with self-esteem. But traditionalist Chris Woodhead, the
former chief inspector of schools says, "I don't see why a teacher cannot create a positive learning
environment through the subject they teach and their personality. Dogs strike me as a bit of a publicity
stunt. It's the kind of sentimental story journalists love." Despite this sentiment, Henry remains as
popular as ever.
Andrew Wainwright, a student at Dronfield School, says there is something magical and calming
about being able to interact with Henry during his time at the school's catch-up classes, and that if he
falls behind, that opportunity will be denied. Even doubting staff have finally been won round. Perhaps
that is because Henry, who lies on the floor during staff meetings, has also had a calming effect on them.

Hello, everybody. I'd like to share with you my first-hand experience of a humanoid robot.
I met one on the floor of a Tokyo department store, working in customer service. Aiko Chihira was so life-like
that I first mistook her for a human being. I was so surprised when I saw so many people taking pictures of a
receptionist. Only a few minutes later did I realise that she was a robot! She was wearing a traditional silk
kimono and looked really pretty. I think she is supposed to be in her early thirties. Her silicone body was
perfect and her subtle movements when bowing or blinking made her seem almost real.
I heard that many people rushed to the department store that day not to shop, but to see Chihira with their own
eyes. Some people didn't even believe that she was a robot. One woman said that she had never expected that
Chihira would be so real.
I had already seen pictures of robotic broadcasters reading news reports. However, this face-to-face meeting
made a strong impression on me. I still feel very excited and look forward to seeing other humanoid robots in
the future.
PART 2
Host: Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. Please join me in welcoming our guests tonight, two young high
achievers: Julie Tran in mining Jimmy Tran in hospitality. Now, who'll be the first to tell our listeners how
they kick-started their career?
Jimmy: People often say 'ladies first', so I think my sister should have the privilege.
Host: I can't agree with you more, Jimmy. Julie, let's hear your story first. How did you get to where you are
today?
Julie: Well, I studied art and design at a vocational school, but I'm now working as a project manager in the
mining industry. After I got my diploma, I worked as a teaching assistant at a kindergarten. It was a part-time
job so I had all the afternoons free. I realised that the job was not challenging enough. I had plenty of time and
I was capable of handing a lot more, so I started an international business course.
Host: You mean you worked part-time and studied at the same time?
Julie: That's right. lt was a degree course, and it took me three years to complete it. Then I got hired by West
Corner, a mining company. in the marketing team. I was lucky to have a very supportive supervisor, who gave
10
me the opportunity to attend workshops and further develop my professional skills.
Host: And you continued learning?
Julie: Yes, I really enjoyed what I studied so I took a course in project development and management. Upon
completion, I was internally transferred to the project team as the company had secured a good deal in North
Viet Nam. It was a promotion for me, partly because I had studied to gain the right qualifications and partly
because I am bilingual. I speak Vietnamese at home with my parents. So, that's how I started my journey to
where I am today.
Host: Thank you, Julie. And now our second young guest, who seems to have a different story, Jimmy.
PART 3
INT: Today I’m talking to two people who’ve recently set up their own businesses – Chloe Price and Martin
Moore. Chloe – you’ve produced a new line of skincare products that’s already selling well. What’s the secret
of your success?
CP: I did take a couple of business courses after college, but I don’t actually have a Masters degree in Business
Administration, an MBA, and my paper qualifications generally are a bit sketchy. What’s driven me to the
level I’m at is learning as I go – failure and success can both teach you something! In college I was always
planning social events, designing websites – and writing for fun. I learned to create programmes, fundraise,
operate on a budget and interact with people. I think this is why I was able to sell my skincare products after
only six months of research.
INT: Would you say that technology has positively changed the entrepreneurial environment?
CP: Definitely. My approach to finance would have been quite different if I’d had to set up a physical
shopfront – an online store has taken less time and reduced my initial outlay. I take all my photos on my
iPhone. Using social media makes it possible to engage with my customers – that’s the huge advantage. When
I was designing packaging, I polled friends on Facebook for their preference – plastic or glass. The technology
is there to promote my business too, of course.
INT: Martin – you’ve set yourself up as a distributor of snack foods. What made you choose the food industry?
MM: Well, after one year in college where I majored in business administration, I decided my long-term goal
would be to set up on my own, so I dropped out. College just wasn’t taking me where I wanted to be. I needed
to pick up some practical experience so I ended up working for one of the major players in the food packaging
industry – that’s what was available at the time. I must say I had reservations about the way the work of their
employees is organised, but that’s where I got the background know-how to make it on my own. And it all
took off from that point.
INT: So how did you decide what you were going to distribute?
MM: I went to the Sweets and Snacks Expo in Chicago, but first checked out the list of exhibitors on the
website, and researched the companies listed there. A product called SnapStyx was what ended up working
best for me. And that’s because they’re healthy – no genetically modified ingredients – and they taste great as
well! It helps that the manufacturer has a solid reputation, and of course they’ve been promoted by some pretty
cool celebrities. The packaging’s great as well.
INT: So do you have any advice and guidance for others who’d like to follow your example?
MM: Most of my friends aren’t interested – they’re looking for a bit more security, I suppose. For people out
there – time’s never lost by going to the odd leadership lecture the way I did. And as Chloe’s said, the internet
11
can be a mine of information, but you have to treat it carefully. But I’ve actually learnt most in the jobs I’ve
done by talking to other distributors. Guys who’ve been in the business longer than me love to talk about their
work, especially to a young one trying to follow in their footsteps – that’s invaluable. I generally got a good
response from the companies I emailed, but there’s a limit to what reading up can teach you.
INT: Finally a question to both of you. Have there been any surprises along the way?
CP: I knew I’d have to be prepared to put in the time – 18-hour days sometimes in my case. And then there
are the things you wouldn’t necessarily have thought to worry about. I spent an eternity deciding on the
typeface for my website, but that has to be just as right, in its own way, as something major like a financial
plan.
MM: Getting funding was something I probably underestimated, but I took lots of good advice before deciding
on who to approach. And I wouldn’t have believed how much time has to be devoted to little things like
copying and filing invoices correctly. Anyway, we’ve obviously both given it our all – but I’m sure we were
both prepared to do that from the outset.
