Low Pass Filter
• A low-pass filter is an electronic filter that
passes low-frequency signals and attenuates
(reduces the amplitude of) signals with
frequencies higher than the critical (cutoff)
frequency ( ).
• The critical frequency ( ) is the frequency
at which the filter’s output voltage is 70.7%
of the maximum voltage.
Low Pass Filter
• RC and RL circuits
Low Pass Filter
• Cutoff Frequency
Low Pass Filter
• When the input is DC (0 Hz), the output voltage equals the
input voltage because is infinitely large.
• As the input frequency is increased, decreases and
gradually decreases until a critical frequency is
reached where = R.
Solving for ,
by application of the voltage-divider formula:
Since =R at the output voltage at the critical frequency is
High Pass Filter
A high-pass filter is an electronic filter that
passes high-frequency signals and attenuates
(reduces the amplitude of) signals with
frequencies lower than the cutoff frequency.
Resistor R
Inductor L
High Pass Filter
• Cutoff Frequency:
• When the input frequency is at its critical value =R, and the
output voltage is 0.707 , just as in the case of the low-pass
filter.
• As the input frequency increases above the critical frequency,
decreases and, as a result, the output voltage increases and
approaches a value equal to
