Practice Writing a Lab Report Activity

Instructions: Use the lab example provided to complete the Practice Writing a Lab Report
activity. Please fill in this lab report with the appropriate information and data from the lab
scenario. Note: Use the information provided in the lab scenario to complete this assignment.
DO NOT submit guided notes.

Title:
Include your name, instructor’s name, and the name of the lab

Objective(s):
What is the purpose of the lab?

Hypothesis:
What was the hypothesis in the experiment? The hypothesis should make a prediction of the
outcome of your experiment and should include an explanation of why you expect that outcome.

The organic fertilizer will show more growth in length than no fertilizer and chemical fertilizer

Variables:
• Independent Variable: fertilizer
• Dependent Variable: length
• Controlled Variable: seed

Materials:
Three pots
Three of the same seed
Soil
Organic fertilizer
Chemical fertilizer
Water
Ruler
Procedures:
The procedures are listed in Practice Writing a Lab Report Activity. You do not need to include
them here.

Data Analysis:
Part 1: Include the data provided in the lab scenario here. If you were conducting an experiment,
you would record your data in a table.
Height of Plant
Days
No fertilizer Chemical Organic
(cm) Fertilizer (cm) Fertilizer (cm)
1 0 0 0
2 0 0 0
3 0 0 0
4 0 0 0
5 0 0.5 0
6 0 1.3 0
7 0 1.9 0.3
8 0 2.2 1.6
9 0 4.5 3.2
10 0.2 5.2 3.8

Part 2: Using your data in Part 1, create a graph that represents the height of each plant over the
ten days.

Insert chart [Hint: don’t forget to consider the relationship between your data and the type of
graph to best represent your data. A line graph would be the best option to analyze this data.
Remember to give your graph a title.]
Conclusion:
Include the following as a summary paragraph in the conclusion of your lab report:

• Analysis of the data-

o Which fertilizer worked best? Explain.
o The chemical fertilizer worked the best why? As you can see in the chart the
chemical fertilizer showed more growth
o Which plant did not grow well? Explain.
o The no fertilizer didn’t go will it burly grew you can see it in the chart
• Description of how the investigation could be tested further
• It would be better if they tried to experiment with a variety of different seeds to see if the
results would change.
Questions:
1. Explain what makes a scientific experiment reliable. Be sure to include at least three
reasons to support your answer.
Replicability: First, you should let unbiased scientists experiment to see if the results match.

Randomization: Using random methods to select participants helps ensure that the sample is
fair it also minimizes bias and reduces errors in the results.

Control variables :Reliable experiments keep things like temperature and light the same. This
helps researchers understand how the main variable affects the results
