What is the skeletal system?

The skeletal system is the internal framework of

the body, made up of bones, cartilage, ligaments,
and other tissues. It supports the body, allows for
movement, protects internal organs, and stores
essential minerals.
The Function of Skeletal System
What is the primary function of the skeletal system?
The primary function of the
skeletal system is to provide
structure, support, and shape
to the body, allowing it to stand
upright.

How does the skeletal system protect internal organs?

It protects vital organs by encasing them
in bone. For example, the skull protects
the brain, and the rib cage protects the
heart and lungs.
In what way does the skeletal system assist in movement?

Movement – the skeleton allows movement of the body

as a whole and its individual parts. The bones form
joints and act as levers, allowing muscles to pull on
them to produce movement. The bones of the skeleton
provide surfaces for the attachment of muscles.

What role does the skeletal system play in producing blood cells?

Production of blood cells – certain bones in the skeleton contain red bone marrow and
the bone marrow produces red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Examples of
bones that contain marrow are the pelvis, sternum, vertebrae and clavicle.
Interesting Facts about the Skeletal System
The adult human body has 206 bones. However,
babies are born with around 300 bones, some of
which fuse together as they grow.

Femur is the largest bone in your body. Most adult

femurs are around 18 inches long. The femur is
also the strongest bone in your body.

Bones are living tissue. They constantly grow, break down, and repair
themselves throughout life.
