4000VA-48VDC-230VAC

1. Unit description
The inverter is a single-phase 4000VA output inverter module, with a 48VDC nominal input voltage
(40 to 80VDC). It has been developed for cost effective, highly smart modular telecommunication
power systems. Modules can be easily paralleled without any additional accessories or extra options.
The main application of the inverter is for supply telecom equipment, computers, or any kind of AC
load for which they provide, with or without power system controllers, a number of essential system
functions such as : inverter current sharing, high level of electronic protection including auto-
disconnection mechanism and identification of faulty units. The inverters works with an ambient air
temperature up to 50oC.
The input and output of the inverter meets the generic requirements of telecommunication power
supplies standards in terms of noise, voltage programmability, as well as overvoltage, overload and
short-circuit protection.

1.2. Description of operation

Please refer to figure 2, which presents a block diagram of the inverter module.
The inverter is a state-of-the-art high frequency power conversion equipment. The unit consists of a
new input symmetrical flux forward stage followed by a full IGBT bridge stage performing a very
efficient DC/AC conversion.
The DC battery voltage is converted first by the forward stage, which has an inherent advantage to
meet the input filter requirements. The output of the forward converter is stabilised at approximately
400 VDC. This input forward stage insures the DC/AC insulation tested at 4000Vdc.
A full digital control based on a powerful DSP ensures proper operation of both power stages.
Remote control and monitoring of the modules are possible in local mode or by using a digital system
supervisor. For detailed description of available controls, monitoring functions and operation, please
refer to appropriate section.

Figure 2. Block diagram

The Load Sharing process is based on an active democratic principle, which requires communication
between all modules. This communication is done through a digital bus running at the rate of
256kBits. As soon as an inverter is connected to the communication bus, it is automatically detected
by other modules and participates to the load sharing.
When an inverter fails, a selective auto-disconnection process is engaged in order to isolate this
damaged module from the system, feeding the load without disturbance.
When starting an inverter, it checks for all status before connecting himself to the power bus
automatically.
The number of units, which can run in parallel, is limited to 18 units.
Transient disturbances of output voltage during installation, removal or failure of one module in the
system: < ± 0.5 V.

The load sharing is based on an algorithm which guarantees a complete regulation of the output
voltage. Practically the power deviation between modules is typically less than 5% related to the
average power.

7. Module maintenance

The inverter is a fan cooled unit.

Fan speed is power controlled by the regulation process.
For preventive maintenance, the replacement of the fan every 7 years is advised.

Caution: Switch OFF the module and wait a minimum of 5 minutes before to
! start the fan replacement.

To replace a fan:

1. Switch OFF the inverter module

2. Remove the module from the system
3. Wait 5 minutes
4. Turn the module over and identify the screw fixing the fan
5. Remove the screw
6. Pull the fan from its location and disconnect the connector
7. Place back the new fan in the module and connect it
8. Fix it with the screw
9. Replace the module in his cabinet position
10. Switch ON the module

8. Protections and alarms

8.1. Internal electronic protection

The inverter modules are provided with internal electronic protections.

There are 3 protection types :

a) Protections stopping the module without automatic re-starting

That kind of protection acts when a serious internal fault occurs. There is a module disconnection in
relation to DC input power bus and AC output power bus.
When a module stops, it displays the reason or fault origin (see troubleshooting section).

b) Protections stopping the module with automatic re-starting

That kind of protection acts when some monitored parameters pass temporarily over their limit.
The module stops and restarts when the parameter comes back within its limit range .
Those protections are active when :
A DC input voltage is out of range (standard values are V≤40 V or V ≥80 V). Module stops at 40VDC
and 80VDC (default values) and will restart at 47VDC and <79VDC (default values).
The message « input voltage too low » or « input voltage too high » will be displayed in such
cases.

c) Protection without module stopping

That protection concerns only the output power limitation.

The module is able to give 6000W / 6000VA during 5 sec.

If the overload remains, the inverter output current is limited depending on heatsink temperature.
Between 4000VA and 4400VA overloads are allowed with unlimited time, under the condition that the
heat-sink temperature is kept under 85°C.

8.2. Fuses protection

The inverter modules have an input fuse and an output fuse.

When inverters are used in any system, it's recommended to have an additional input breaker
for modules (100A rating per module) in order to protect the DC input cable and the input filter.

9. Troubleshooting guide

9.1. You press the local ON switch and nothing happens

1) If the display is OFF please check the DC cable, DC input breaker and verify the presence of a DC
voltage at the input. If display is still OFF, the module has an internal fault and must return in
factory for repair. Please fill up the failure sheet at the end of this document and contact your
distributor.

2) Module can be started in 3 different ways:

- locally by means of the ON push button
- remotely by means of static switch ON/OFF switch or remote ON/OFF contact
- by means of the controller (optional)

OFF RDI REM IS

0% 100%

OFF RDI means that the module is off locally. Press the ON switch to start.

OFF REM means that the module is OFF remotely either by means of ARCON STM if installed or
by means of Remote ON/OFF contact if installed. Check the ON/OFF switch on the
static transfer switch or check your remote ON/OFF contact

OFF IS means that the module is OFF by means of controller. Check the ON position in the
controller.

9.2. Module stops and display status (Messages table list)

The inverter module can take the decision to stop for internal or external reason.

The Following table list gives the various reasons for a module to stop. The message with (R) in
front, means that this fault can be Recovered.

In case the user cannot find a solution, the module has to return in factory for inspection. Please fill
up the failure sheet at the end of this document and contact your distributor.
