IMPORTANT QUESTIONS

CHAPTER – AMINES:
MCQ’S:

1. When ethyl bromide reacts with silver cyanide, the main

product will be: (a) Ethyl cyanide (b)Ethyl isocyanide (c)
Ethene (d)Ethanol
2. Amongst the following the strongest base in aqueous
medium is............
(A)CH3NH3 (b)NCCH2NH2 (c)(CH3)2NH (d)C6H5NHCH3
3. Consider the basic strength of amines in aq solution which
one has the smallest pKb value?
(a)C6H5NH2 (b)(CH3)2NH (c)CH3NH2 (d)(CH3)3N
4. Amides may be converted into amines by a reaction named
after:
(A)Hoffmann Bromamide (B)Claisen (C)Perkin (D)Kekule
5. For the transformation of m-bromobenzenediazonium
chloride into bromobenzene the reagent used is
(a)LIALH4 (b)H3PO2 (c)H3O+ (D)H2/Pt

VSA:

1. Out of CH3NH2 AND CH3OH WHICH HAS HIGHER BOILING

POINT? Why?
2. Ethylamine is soluble in water whereas aniline is not. Explain
3. Arrange the following in increasing base strength in gas phase:
(C2H5)4N, C2H5NH2, (C2H5)2NH
4. Why aniline dissolves in HCL?
5. Give one test to distinguish between ethylamine and aniline.

SA:

1. What is the role of HNO3 in the nitrating mixture used for

nitration of benzene?
2. Convert the following:
(A) Aniline to 1,3,5-tribromobenzene
(B) Aniline to phenol
3. An aromatic compound A on treatment with aq ammonia and
heating forms compound B which on heating with Br2 and KOH
forms a compound C of molecular formula C6H7N: Write the
structure and IUPAC names of A,B and C.
4. Write the reaction involved in the..... Diazotisation
Give reason: Aromatic diazonium salts are more stable than
aliphatic diazonium salts.
5. Illustrate the following reaction with example in each case:
(A) Sandmeyer reaction.
(B) Coupling reaction.

LA:
1. A colourless substance ‘A’ (C6H7N) is sparingly soluble in water and gives
a water-soluble compound ‘B’ on treatment with mineral acid. On
reacting with CHCI3 and alcoholic potash, ‘A’ produces an obnoxious
smell due to compound ‘C’ formation. The reaction of ‘A’ with benzene
sulphonyl chloride gives compound ‘D’, which is soluble in alkali. With
NaNO2 and HCI, ‘A’ forms compound ‘E’, which reacts with phenol in an
alkaline medium to give’ F’ orange dye.
2. Identify compounds ‘A’ to ‘F’.
3. State reasons for the following :
(i) pKb value for aniline is more than that for methylamine.
(ii) Ethylamine is soluble in water whereas aniline is not
soluble in water.
(iii) Primary amines have higher boiling points than tertiary
amines. (All India 2011)
4. Identify the following compounds:

5. Give reasons:
(i) Acetylation of aniline reduces its activation effect,
(ii) CH3NH2 is more basic than C6H5NH2.
(iii) Although —NH2 is o/p directing group, yet aniline on
nitration gives a significant amount of m-nitroaniline. (Delhi
2017)
