5.6 The safety officer shall be responsible to ensure the safety of workers during the
progress of work

6.0 PROCEDURE:

6.1 Reinforcement Handling:

6.1.1 Receive reinforcement along with manufactures test certificate /
laboratory test reports and submit the test certificates / reports to client.
Prior to submission, the certificates / reports shall be reviewed in line
with acceptance criteria as per relevant IS code etc. complete.
6.1.2 Check the reinforcement corresponding to weigh slip, transport and
unload the same at reinforcement yard.
6.1.3 Against requirement from site, bars shall be cut and bent to size, shape
and dimension as shown in bar bending schedule prepared by BBS
Engineer based on Good for construction drawings. The BBS shall be
approved prior to use by site in charge/client representative.
6.1.4 Reinforcement shall be tied as per the approved construction drawing
and any extra bars provided at site with approval of client or
consultants for its necessity and shall be recorded in the pour card
/Joint Measurement Records (JMR).
6.1.5 Unusable cut bars and scrap reinforcement shall be properly placed at
yard.

6.2 Bar Bending Schedule:

6.2.1 Prepare bar bending schedule based on the latest GFC drawing and to
be submitted to Client Engineer for review and subsequent application.
6.2.2 Bar bending schedule shall clearly specify the following:
a) Drawing No., Revision No & date, General Drawing & details
references.
b) Rebar material identification.

c) Bar diameter.
d) Numbers
e) Cut- length
f) Shapes.
6.2.3 Bar bending schedule shall take into account the following field
/design requirement.
a) Desirable lap location and staggering of laps.
b) Lap lengths.
c) Development length / Anchorage length

6.3 Cutting, Bending and Placing:

6.3.1 The rebar shall be clean, free from mud and oil and shall be used from
approved lot.
6.3.2 Cutting and bending shall confirm to the details given in the approved
bar bending schedule.
i. Bars shall be bent cold to the specified shape and dimensions or
as directed by the Engineer- in-charge using approved bar
bender.
ii. Bars bent during transport or handling shall be straightened
before being used on work, they shall not be heated to facilitate
bending.
iii. Unless otherwise specified a U type hook at the end of each bar
shall invariably be provided.
iv. BBS should be as per approved drawing.
v. For bars greater than 25mm, the minimum radius shall be three
times the diameter for mild steel bars and six times the
diameter for high strength deformed bars.
6.3.3 Place the reinforcement as per Approved for construction drawings.
ensuring the following aspects properly:
a) Type & size of bar
b) Number of bars.
c) Location & lengths of laps, splices as per drawing.

d) Curtailment of bars.
e) In two-way reinforcement, check the direction of reinforcement
in various layers.
f) Adequate number of chairs, spacer bars and cover blocks.
g) Size of cover blocks of all element as per drawings
h) All the bars shall be tied with binding wire 18-gauge black
annealed G I Wire steel in size and conforming to IS: 280

6.3.4 In case of columns and walls, vertical bars shall be kept in normal
position with timber templates at top level having slots accurately cut
in for bar position. Such templates shall be removed after the
concreting has progressed up to a level just below them.
6.3.5 The Vertical distance required between successive layers of bars shall
be maintained by providing space bars, inserted at such intervals that
main bars do not perceptibly sag between adjacent space bars.
6.3.6 Over laps shall be staggered for different bars and located at points
along the span where neither shear nor bending moment is maximum
For lapping as far as possible bars of maximum length available shall
be used. Not more than ⅓rd of the bars or as specified in the drawings
shall be lapped at one section.
6.3.7 Reinforcement bars shall not be welded unless shown on the drawings
or instructed by the Project Manager.
6.3.8 Walkways & borrow runs for placing & compacting the concrete shall
be independent of the reinforcement.
6.3.9 Loose binding wire and other extraneous metal shall be removed from
inside the formwork prior to concrete placing.
6.4 Cover to Reinforcement:
6.4.1 Care shall be taken to maintain the correct cover to reinforcement.

6.4.2 For concrete members exposed to weather, earth, action of harmful

chemicals, acid vapour, saline atmosphere, sulphurous smoke etc.
minimum cover for reinforcement shall be increased by 15mm to
40mm.
6.4.3 For concrete members of water retaining structures minimum cover for
reinforcement shall be as stipulated in IS: 3370 Part-2.
6.4.4 The minimum cover for reinforcement shall not be greater than that
specified above or shown on the drawings plus 10mm except for
bundled bars.
6.4.5 For bundled bars, minimum concrete cover shall be equal to the
equivalent diameter of the bundled but need not be greater than 50mm.
6.4.6 Exposed reinforcement intended for binding with future extensions
shall be protected from corrosion as shown in the drawings.

6.5 Cleaning:
6.5.1 After placing, the reinforcement shall be maintained in a clean
condition until the concrete is placed.
6.5.2 On no account the bars shall be oiled or painted or mould oil used on
the formwork be allowed to come in contact with the bars.
6.5.3 Before concreting is commenced, the bars shall be thoroughly cleaned
with dry gunny bags if they are coated lightly with rust or other
impurities.
