REFLECTION
The Department of Education's Matatag Curriculum is a project that seeks to improve
teaching and learning in order to address issues in education. The Philippines' Department of
Education (DepEd) has introduced the MATATAG Curriculum as a new educational initiative to
raise student learning standards. This curriculum's main goal is to emphasize fundamental abilities
in language, reading, math, and civic values. The MATATAG Curriculum reduces lessons and
content by organizing subjects in a more relevant and straightforward manner, allowing teachers
and students to concentrate more on important skills.
Its primary goal is to give students a more thorough and in-depth understanding,
particularly in fundamental subjects like language, reading and literacy, math, and
MAKABANSA. More importantly, though, is to ensure that GMRC continues to teach and learn
in a way that is applicable to both academic and non-academic contexts. By reducing the number
of subjects from seven to five, the MATATAG Curriculum seeks to improve the basis of students'
education. It has been reduced in the new curriculum to more effectively emphasize the
fundamental abilities needed in the early phases of learning. Language, Reading and Literacy,
Mathematics, MAKABANSA, and GMRC, or Good Manners and Right Conduct, are the areas of
emphasis for the shift. The removal of Mother Tongue as a separately topic and the combination
of English and Filipino under "Language" demonstrate a more streamlined approach to teaching
languages. However, the inclusion of "Reading and Literacy" is a step toward strengthening pupils'
reading abilities, which form the cornerstone of their education. Furthermore, MAKABANSA and
GMRC's recognition demonstrates a conscious effort to support students' Filipino identities and
character in addition to their academic performance. All things considered, the MATAAG
Curriculum emphasizes critical abilities and values that students may apply to their everyday lives,
marking a step toward a more concentrated and efficient educational system.
A Matatag curriculum, in my viewpoint, is crucial for us as students since it takes into
consideration our needs and capabilities. The development of soft skills like communication,
problem-solving, and critical thinking is given more emphasis because these are useful in everyday
life. These abilities are critical to helping us get ready for whichever career path we choose after
completion. Teachers will, however, have greater structure and direction in their instruction, which
will improve both their ability to convey teachings to students and their understanding of the
material. Teachers are encouraged to implement student-centered learning practices by a
Matatag curriculum. These techniques allow students to become more interactive in the learning
process and apply the information they have learned toward practical objectives.
Another element of the Matatag Curriculum that is different from the past curriculum is
the contextualization of learning, whereby students are able to undertake real life problems and
situations. It focuses on the development of the entire student as a person as well as his academic
performance. This kind of education is expected to foster improved citizens who can contribute to
the world economy in the right manner. Furthermore, the use of technology in instructions in a
society that has embraced the use of technology is well emphasized in the Matatag Curriculum.
Learners are more engaged and involved in class when the use of technology is adopted, and
teachers become more creative in teaching. Digital technologies and internet resources contribute
to the rich and interesting experience of the lessons. Teachers can leverage technology to develop
teaching strategies that are based on the specific areas of need for each student. This way, teachers
may adapt the content and tasks they provide to each student, which results in better learning
outcomes. The students will be able to acquire the necessary tools and applications that are used
in the current economy by learning digital skills. Therefore, the Matatag Curriculum has provided
all students the opportunity to hope for a more appropriate and inclusive education.
In summary, by focusing on core abilities and reducing the number of learning
competencies, the Matatag curriculum seeks to deliver more valuable and practical skills than
previous curriculum. Through these modifications, pupils will be prepared to take on the
difficulties of the real world with competence, self-assurance, and citizenship.
