b. Brief Description–Describe what is the job:


Psychiatrists diagnose and treat mental illnesses through therapy, medication and counselling. They often work
at privately owned clinics but are also found at hospitals and mental health centers.

c. Main Duties and Responsibilities:


A psychiatrist's responsibilities and duties involve correct, effective diagnosis and treatment of client’s mental
illness and patient confidentiality.

independently, working with others, fast-paced environment, etc.)
Psychiatrists would work in-person
e. Personality traits, characteristics, and/or values of people that work in this occupation
1. Communication skills. Psychiatrists need communication skills to communicate effectively with their
patients and other healthcare support staff.

2. Compassion. Psychiatrists must be able to treat patients and their families with compassion and
understanding.

3. Detail oriented. Psychiatrists must ensure that patients are receiving appropriate treatment and
medications. They must also monitor and record various pieces of information related to patient care.

4. Organizational skills. Strong organizational skills, including good recordkeeping, are critical in both
medical and business settings.

5. Patience. Psychiatrists may work for long periods with patients who need special attention.

6. Problem-solving skills. Psychiatrists need to evaluate patients’ symptoms and administer the appropriate
treatments.

The most significant safety risks would be patient violence as mentally unwell patients could be dangerous.
Keeping patients at a distance would reduce this safety risk. Emotional and psychological stress is also a risk
when treating patients. Talking with friends and co-workers, therapy and other mental health care would
reduce this problem.

Psychiatrists that work in clinics normally have a 9-5 work schedule.
