Glass Blockwork Method Statement
A. Preparation of Work, Materials, and Components
1. Overloading Considerations
When bringing materials and components to the work area, ensuring that the
structure can handle the load is crucial. Avoid overloading the structure, as
this can lead to safety hazards.
2. Scaffolding Planning
For work at heights, plan the scaffolding materials needed. Additionally,
consider the need for extra manpower to assist with lifting glass blocks at
elevated positions.
3. Layout Planning
Anticipate the position of openings and other elements in the work above to
prevent adjustments of units that could result in incorrect or uneven
bonding.
B. Preparation of Mortar Mixes
1. Machine Mixing
Whenever possible, mortar should be mixed using a machine. Hand mixing
may only be used for small quantities and should take place on a watertight
platform.
2. Batch Boxes
When mixing mortar at the site, employ batch boxes to ensure accurate and
consistent mix proportions.
3. Time Limitations
Use mortars (except for retarded mortars) within 2 hours of mixing, or
adhere to the specified timeframe.
C. Building Walls
1. Adhering to specifications
Construct the work within the permissible deviations as specified in the contract.
2. Laying Blocks
Unless otherwise specified or permitted, place blocks on a full bed of mortar and
fill all joints. Follow detailed reinforcement placement instructions, and use
spacers as needed to maintain level courses and vertical alignment. Regularly
check and correct the plumb of quoins and all faces. It's advisable to align
vertically every fifth or sixth perpend and ensure uniform thickness of horizontal
joints.

3. Course Height Limit
Avoid exceeding the specified height for each course as outlined in the contract
specifications.
4. Pointing
If pointing is specified, remove excess mortar from joints as work progresses.
Prepare mortar for pointing as per the specification.
5. Bonding to Adjacent Structures
Bond all work to adjacent structures using stainless steel cramps at the specified
spacing, unless stated otherwise in the contract.
6. Cleaning
Clean all glass blocks as work progresses to maintain a neat appearance and
prevent excess mortar buildup.
This Glass Blockwork Method Statement outlines essential procedures and precautions for
working with glass blocks. Adhering to these guidelines ensures the safe and efficient
completion of the project. Always consult the specific contract specifications for additional
requirements and details related to your project. Safety and quality should remain top
priorities throughout the construction process.
