NOSODES
• “NOSO” the Greek word, signifies an idea or related to
disease.
• Alledy defines it is characterized by a pathological substance
used as medicine prepared in advance and according to
Homoeopathic methods of dilution.
• So, the nosodes are some Homoeopathic preparations
obtained from pathological secretions or excretions as well
as from the culture of the pathogenic microorganisms like,
viruses, bacteria, fungi or parasites.

NOSODES
• Hahnemann made a short proving of Psorin (the secretion
from the scabies vesicles) and enlisted this preparation in
the group of antipsoric medicine.
• Since Hahnemann’s time, several other nosodes have been
added in our Materia Medica through proving and by
clinical applications. They are recorded by Dr. H.C. Allen in
his “Materia Medica of Nosodes”. Those medicines are –
Anthracinum, Diptherinum, Lyssin, Malandrinum, Maleria
officinalis, Medorrhinum, Psorinum, Pyrogen, Secale cor,
Syphillinum, Tuberculinum and Variolinum.
• Later, Dr. Hering, Dr. Swan and others contributed a lot to
increase the number of nosodes in our Mateira Medica.

G. B. Stearns Says -
“As a generalization, nosodes made from
pathological material, particularly if the
persons from whom they are taken have been
successfully prescribed for have a much
broader field of action and can be more safely
selected intuitively than the nosodes made
from individual bacterial cultures.”
Dr. K. K. Naskar, HOD, Deptt of Mat Med,

Farrington says -
“The nosodes seldom
complete the cure. You have
to follow up with some
other remedy.”

A. Pulford says -
“The nosodes, like all other
remedies, have their special
indications, and when we
wander away from that we are
tramping on allopathic grounds.”

Classification of Nosodes -
A) Nosodes can be classified into three (based on the types of
products) –
1. Homoeopathic preparation from disease product
(including tissues and secretions) – Ex. Tuberculinum,
Carcinosin, Syphillinum, Medorrhinum, etc.
2. Homoeopathic preparation from causative organisms
(cultured) – Strptococcinum, Staphylococcinum etc.
3. Intestinal or Bowel nosodes - B. Morgan, B. Proteus,
Sycotic co. etc.
* Another type of nosodes can be included which is used by
some Homoeopath as under the name of “Tautopathy “–
that means, secretion or discharges from the pathological
tissues or organs of the patient himself for his own
treatment on that same pathological condition.

Classification of Nosodes -
B) According to the Source –
1. Disease products of HUMAN BEING –
- Bacillinum: maceration of typical tubercular lung.
- Tuberculinum: cultured bacilli from tuberculus lung/pus from
tubercular abscess
- Carcinosin: cancerous tissues from breast
- Medorrhinum: urethral discharge from gonorrhoeal patient.
- Psorinum: sero-purulent matter of scabies vesicles.
- Syphillinum: from syphilitic lesion in primary or early secondary
stage.
- Variolinum: lymph from small pox pustules.
- Morbillinum: from the pharyngeal exudates of patient suffering
from measles (not yet treated).
- Diptherinum: from Diptheric membrane.

2. Disease products of OTHER ANIMALS –
- Lyssin: from the saliva of rabid dog
- Pyrogenium: from decomposed lean beaf.
- Ambra grisea: morbid product found in belly i.e. Fatty
secretion of gall of sperm whale
- Anthracinum: alcoholic extract of the anthrax poison,
prepared from the spleen of sheep or cattle
- Malandrinum: from grease of horse.
3. Disease products of PLANTS –
- Secale cornutum: from fungus, growing upon the
seedof the secale cereals and others grains
- Ustilago maidis: from a fungus growing on the stem,
grain of indian corns

General conditions (indications) to
prescribe the Nosodes
1. In some stubborn cases, when apparently similar
medicine does not work or best selected
medicines fail to act. The nosode, which can
cover the case, can help to take this case in the
right direction of cure in a much shorter period of
time.
2. As an intercurrent remedy it can clear the
miasmatic obstacle(s) in the process of cure.
3. When there is pathological conditions has been
removed by homoeopathic treatment but
progressive debility or uneasiness continuing
without apparent cause/ causes. Ex. Psorinum.

General conditions (indications) to
prescribe the Nosodes
4. When there is a past history of suppressed fixed
miasmatic acute disease. The well proved nosode(s)
which has been prepared from the same disease
product, can be given to remove their remaining
complaints. Example –
- Never been well since her suffering from measles or
long continuing complaint appeared like deafness just
after suffering of measles – Morbillinum may be the
medicine of choice.
- Never been well since her suffering from Typhoid or
any complaint since his/her suffering from Typhoid –
Typhoidinum may be a choice.

General conditions (indications) to
prescribe the Nosodes
5. When there is paucity of symptoms or there is no such clear
picture to prescribe any other medicine. Mainly on the
basis of past history or family history nosode(s) can be
prescribed. Example – Past history of Tuberculosis –
Tuberculinum/ Bacillinum; Family history of Cancer -
Carcinosin, etc.
6. In some acute and severe pathological conditions, when
there is no time or condition to select an individualised
homoeopathic treatment, homoeopathic preparation of
such pathological morbid product or responsible organisms
can be apply based on its characteristic indication/s to
overcome the dangerous situation. Example – Pyrogen for
any septic condition based on its characteristic pulse
related indication or others. Streptococcin for acute
condition of rheumatic fever etc.
Dr. K. K. Naskar, HOD, Deptt of Mat Med,

DNDeHMC&H
General conditions (indications) to
prescribe the Nosodes
7. As a prophylaxis of acute epidemic diseases with
infection of same or similar type of organism. The
nosode, prepared from that disease product or the
organism can be selected as prophylactic medicine for
that epidemic. Ex. Influenzinum for influenza,
Morbillinum for measles etc.
8. Some nosodes are well proved, and established as
constitutional polychrest medicines by their repeated
clinical observations and verifications. These nosodes
must be used as an polychrest constitutional medicine
based on individualisation. Ex.
Tuberculinum/Bacillinum, Psorinum, Medorrhinum,
Carcinosin etc.

SARCODES
• The Greek word ‘Sarcode’ means Fleshy.
• Sarcodes are some Homoeopathic
preparations obtained from healthy
animal tissues or secretions.
• They are less proved and usually
prescribed as organopathic medicines.
Dr. K. K. Naskar, HOD, Deptt of Mat Med,
15
DNDeHMC&H
Different types of sarcodes -
• Sarcodes from whole endocrine gland – Ex.
Thyroidinum (thyroid gland of sheep or calf)
• Sarcodes from healthy secretions – ex. Insulinum,
Adrenalin etc.
• Sarcodes from extracts – ex. Oophorinum,
Orchitinum, Pancreatinum etc.
• Other Sarcodes from tissues (other than the
endocrine gland, secretion or extracts) – ex. Fel
tauri (Ox-gall), Lacithin (yolk of egg and animal
brain) etc.

SOME IMPORTANT SARCODES
• Thyroidinum: healthy thyroid tissue of sheep/calf
- Usually prescribed as constitutional medicine.
- History of allergy in any formin the patient in the past, or in
his/her family
- History of metabolic disturbances in the family - gout,
diabetes mel etc.
- Diseases characterized by vasomotor disturbances –
flushing, profuse sweating, palpitations, insomnia etc.
- With other characteristics
• Adrenalin: secretion of adrenal gland of goat
- The main action is stimulation of sympathetic endings,
notably the splanchnic area, causing constriction of
peripheral arterioles, with resulting rise in blood pressure
Dr. K. K. Naskar, HOD, Deptt of Mat Med,

DNDeHMC&H
SOME IMPORTANT SARCODES
• Cholesterinum: a principal ‘sterol’ in higher
animals, the main constituent of gall stone and
bile
- Burning pain insides; on walking holds his hands
on side, hurts him so.
- For cancer of liver
- Gallstone and insomnia
• Insuline: pancreatic hormone
- If administered at suitable intervals in diabetes
mellitus, the blood sugar is maintained.
- Fatigue and tremulousness and profuse sweating.
Dr. K. K. Naskar, HOD, Deptt of Mat Med,
18
DNDeHMC&H
• Fel tauri: fresh ox gall
- Disordered digestion, diarrhoea, and pain in nape of
neck are among its chief symptoms.
- Tendency to sleep after eating
- Violent peristaltic movements.
• Pepsinum – source: extract of stomach of pig.
- In dyspepsia, it has specific action on the secretary
tissues of the stomach itself.
• Pancreatinum – source: extract of pancreatic gland of
ox or sheep.
- It has been used with success in conditions due to
disease or faulty action of the pancreas.
- Burnett says pancreatics are often of great service in
gout.
Dr. K. K. Naskar, HOD, Deptt of Mat Med,
19
DNDeHMC&H
• Oophorinum – source: ovarian extract of sheep or
cow.
- It has been used with much success in case of
suffering following following excision of the ovaries,
and for the climacteric suffering of women.
- It has been suggested as a remedy in ovarian cysts.
- Also for acne or other skin diseases in non-climacteric
women, > during or short time after the period (Zinc).
• Orchitinum – source: testicular extract.
- It has been used with success in the cases of
premature senile decay, nervous breakdown in the
form of debility and sexual weakness; also in
climacteric sufferings.

General conditions (indications) to
prescribe the Sarcodes
1. Distinct pathological conditions, related to the
particular responsible organ or action of the
secretion – homoeopathic preparation from the
tissues of that organ or the secretion can be
prescribed as a Sarcode. Ex. Pepsinum prepared
from stomach of pig, act well on digestive
disorders.
2. When vitality is very low because of prolonged
suffering or the advance pathological conditions –
we can think of Sarcodes of lower potency
related to its responsible pathological condition
to get relief the patient in a very short time.

prescribe the Sarcodes
3. In certain condition where, number of symptoms
are less to make a totality for the prescription of a
constitutional medicine – we can think of
Sarcodes, provided it should cover the area of
pathology along with its characteristic
indications. Ex. Insulinum prepared from insulin
that controls sugar metabolism. By this way we
can prescribe in diabetic condition. Similarly we
can use Cholesterinum for Gall bladder related
disorders.

4. When there is need of paliation, we can think of
Sarcodes as per its action related pathological
conditions.
5. Some sarcodes are well proved, and established
as constitutional polychrest medicines by their
repeated clinical observations and verifications.
These sarcodes must be used as an polychrest
constitutional medicine based on
individualisation. Ex. Thyroidinum.

Contradictions
(Nosodes & Sarcodes)
• In the active phase of incubation period of any acute
disease – homoeopathic aggravation may cause severe
form of disease.
• During any active phase of recurrent attack of chronic
diseases - homoeopathic aggravation may cause severe
form of disease.
• Application in higher potency in advance pathology
where vitality is very poor.
• When there is clear cut picture of any constitutional
polychrest medicine in a chronic cases.
• “The nosodes seldom complete the cure. You have to
follow up with some other remedy.”
