MMÜ 205 Thermodynamics

suggested problems - set # 3

1) Determine the specified property data for water at the indicated states and for each case
locate the state on p-v and T-v diagrams.
a. p=3 bar, T=240 °C; find v in m3/kg and u kJ/kg
b. p=3 bar, v=0.5 m3/kg; find T in °C and u in kJ/kg
c. T=400 °C, p=10 bar; find v in m3/kg and h in kJ/kg
d. T=320 °C, v=0.03 m3/kg; find p in MPa and u in kJ/kg
e. p=28 MPa, T=520 °C; find v in m3/kg and h in kJ/kg
f. T=100 °C, x=60%; find p in bar and v in m3/kg
g. T=10 °C, v=100 m3/kg; find p in kPa and h in kJ/kg
h. p=4 MPa, T=160 °C; find v in m3/kg and u in kJ/kg

2) Determine the values of the specified properties at each of the following conditions
a. Refrigerant 134a at T=60 °C and v=0.072 m3/kg; determine p in kPa and h in kJ/kg
b. Ammonia at p=8 bar and v=0.005 m3/kg; determine T in °C and u in kJ/kg
c. Refrigerant 22 at T=-10 °C and u=200 kJ/kg; determine p in bar and v in m3/kg

3) Calculate the specific volume for saturated water vapor at 10 kPa and 1 MPa using ideal-gas
model and compare your results with table values.

4) A piston cylinder device as shown in the figure contains 1 kg of water at

20 °C with a volume of 0.1 m3. Initially, the piston rest on the stops with
the top surface open to the atmosphere and a mass such that a water
pressure of 400 kPa will lift it.
a. What should be the temperature of heated water to lift the
piston?
b. If it is heated to saturated vapor state find the final
temperature, volume and work.

5) Saturated water at 25 °C with a quality of x=1% is contained in a spherical aluminum vessel;

where the inside diameter of vessel is 0.5 m and the vessel wall thickness is 1 cm. Heat is
transferred to the vessel until the water inside becomes saturated vapor. Considering water
and the vessel together as a control mass, calculate the required heat transfer for the
process.

6) A piston cylinder assembly with stops containing 0.1 kg of water initially at 1 MPa and 500 °C
as shown in the figure below. Then the water undergoes two processes following each other.
Process 1-2 is a constant pressure cooling until the piston face rest against the stops, where
the volume occupied by the water decreased to on-half of its initial value. Process 2-3 is a
cooling process with the piston face resting against the stops, where final water temperature
is 25 °C.
i- Sketch the processes on a p-v diagram, label the states and show important values.

ii- Calculate the work and heat transfer for each process.

7) Air is confined to one side of a rigid container divided by a partition as shown in the figure.
Assuming the air behaves as an ideal gas, determine the final temperature and the heat
transfer.

8) The CO (carbon monoxide) in a piston cylinder assembly undergoes a polytropic expansion with n=k.
Initially its temperature is 93°C and its pressure is 275.8 kPa. The volume becomes twice of its initial
value after the expansion. Assume CO behaves as an ideal gas with constant specific heat ratio, k=1.4.
Determine

a. The final temperature and final pressure

b. The heat transfer and work for this process

9) A rigid tank of 0.054 m3 volume contains air at 278 K and 138 kPa. If 6.3 kJ heat is transferred to air
determine the final temperature and pressure
a. Using a constant specific heat approach
b. Using the ideal gas, air tables
