All reports will be submitted in spiral bound form. The final bound size of the report should
conform to "A4" size (210 x 297 mm). Use Times New Roman as character font. The font size
must be 12 point in the text and 8 point in subscripts and superscripts. Main headings should
be in 12 point and bold typeface. Spacing of the text material should be 1.5. Margins of pages
should conform to the following specifications:
a. Left Margin - 2.5 cm
b. Right Margin - 2.0 cm
c. Top Margin - 2.0 cm
d. Bottom Margin - 2.0 cm
Each page in the report is expected to bear a number: The preliminary section, i.e. Title Page,
Declaration of Independent Work, Abstract, Table of Contents, List of Tables, List of Figures,
should be numbered using lower case Roman Numerals, e.g. i. ii. iii. etc. The title page counts
as Page i but the number does not appear. For the remainder of the report Arabic numbers are
used. Page numbers should be placed at right top edge of the page. The numbering in the main
body of the report should begin with Page 1 and run consecutively to the last page
TITLE PAGE: Download format provided in ChE 401 course page.
Declaration of Independent Work: Download from ChE 401 course page. Written reports that
do not contain this page as part of the bound report will NOT be evaluated.
Abstract: A short summary of the aim of the project, the method(s) used for achieving this aim,
and the major conclusion(s) that may be drawn from the results obtained.
Table of Contents: A comprehensive list of all the sections and sub-sections in the report,
numbered as in the format above, sub-sections numbered as 1.1, 1.2, etc.
List of Tables: This list will follow the Table of Contents and will be numbered according to
the section, in which they are presented, e.g. Table 5.1, 5.2, etc.
List of Figures: This list will follow the List of Tables and will be numbered according to the
section, in which they are presented, e.g. Figure 3.1, 3.2, etc.
OBJECTIVE: This section will present the aim of the project and its significance (one page).
BASIC PRINCIPLES & BACKGROUND: This section will present relevant information on
the project topic, the basic principles involved in the experiment(s) conducted as well as the
equations that are used for extracting meaningful information/parameters from the data
collected. References should be included for all information taken from different sources; if the
information presented in an entire sub-section has to be taken from a single source (this should
be avoided as much as possible), then the reference should be included in the heading of the
sub-section. References should be given to all tables and/or plots taken from other sources.
EXPERIMENTAL SETUP: This section will include a written description of the experimental
set-up as well as schematic diagram(s) and photographs. The diagrams should be large enough
and properly labeled; a legend listing different components of the apparatus should be included.
PROCEDURE: This section will include a step by step description of the experimental
procedure used in as much detail as possible; passive past tense will be used, e.g. “... was
measured, were connected, etc.”
SAMPLE CALCULATIONS & RESULTS: Raw experimental data will be presented in the
Appendices as directly measured. On the other hand, data that have been processed using the
equations of Section 2 will be reported in this section in the form of tables and figures. The
coordinates (abscissa and ordinate) of each figure should be labeled and properly scaled
according to the range of time, length, concentration, etc. values involved. Sample calculations
will also be presented in this section.
DISCUSSION: This section will include an itemized and detailed discussion of the
experimental results presented in the previous section, with specific reference to the tables and
figures of Section 5. Sources of experimental/calculation error and their effect on results
obtained will also be discussed here.
CONCLUSIONS: This section will include an itemized list of the major conclusions that can
be drawn from the experimental results reported and discussed in the previous sections.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Suggestions for improving the experimental system constructed, the
procedure or the analysis method used, etc will be listed in this section. Recommendations for
further work that can be conducted by modifying the system may also be made here.
References: References will be listed in alphabetical order according to the surname (last name)
of the first author. When citing a particular book or paper in the text of the above sections, the
surname of the first author and publication year will be used: for a single author (Smith, 1979);
for two authors (Smith and Jackson, 1989); for more than two authors (Smith, et al., 2001).
Nomenclature: Letters should be in alphabetical order followed by Greek letters in alphabetical
order and other symbols.
Appendices: This section will include sub-sections numbered as Appendix A, Appendix B, etc.
“Raw Experimental Data” will be presented in the Appendix as directly measured; “Calibration
Curves”, “Numerical Methods”, “Computer Programs”, etc will be given as separate sub-
sections. Tables and figures in this section will be named as Table A.1 or Figure B.2, etc.
FORMAT FOR PROPOSAL REPORT
The topic of your project proposal should be within the scope of chemical or biochemical
engineering, i.e. heat transfer, mass transfer, fluid dynamics, reaction kinetics, process control,
biotechnology, thermodynamics, etc. The scope of the proposed project should be different
from the experiments performed in ChE 203 and 302 laboratories; the projects should be similar
to the projects conducted in ChE 401. If your project is a successful one, it may be used in one
of the above courses in coming years, or its scope may be extended into a ChE 492 project.
You are expected to propose, as much as possible, experiments which make use of equipment,
apparatus and chemicals that are already available in our laboratory or can easily be purchased.
Make sure that, you have explained the experimental setup and procedure sections properly.
You have to give price of each item, which is not available in our laboratory, with references
(Price of an item/equipment with full technical specifications such as length, diameter, type,
etc.). Try to come up with appropriate experiments with reasonable cost analysis.
You have to state your measured variables and the variables that will be calculated separately.
By referring to the equations and methods given in the Basic Principles and Background
section, show all your work in detail. You have to explain your experimental setup and
procedure clearly. If an equipment or chemical required is not available in our labs, please show
detailed cost analysis.
If the proposal requests to repeat the experiment runs in order to have accurate data, you have
to show the ANOVA analysis in a table. In Justification of Defined Conditions & Discussion
part, you are expected to discuss the suitability of the parameters you selected in the experiment.
Do not forget to emphasize both in your reports and presentations, why your proposal is
appropriate for ChE 401 course. Also, you have to summary the expected trends of the
parameters, whose effects are investigated on the target variable.
