EVALUATION N° : One OF
SUBJECT: Mathematics DURATION: 2hrs Coef: 3
NAME :
Instructions: Answer all the questions, clearly showing all working where necessary. You are reminded of the
necessity of good English and orderly presentation of your work. Non-programmable electronic calculators
may be used.
1)
i. Given that 𝛼 − 2 and 𝛽 − 2 are the roots of the equation 3𝑥 2 − 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑏 = 0, find the quadratic equation
whose roots are; a) 𝛼 and 𝛽 b) 𝛼 2 and 𝛽 2 .
7 𝑥 2 −6𝑥+8 −1
ii. Show that for all real values of 𝑥, except 4 , cannot take values between −1 and .
4𝑥−7 4
(4 + 3 + 3 = 10𝑚𝑘𝑠)
2)
a. Given that 3𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 5 ≡ 𝑃(𝑥 + 𝑄)2 + 𝑅, find the values of 𝑃, 𝑄 and 𝑅. Hence, sketch the graph of
𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 2 − 6𝑥 + 5, showing clearly the axis of symmetry, the turning point and the intercepts.
b. Given that 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑝𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 3𝑝 − 2, where 𝑝 is a constant, find the possible values of 𝑝 for which the
equation 𝑓(𝑥) = 0 has repeated roots.
(6 + 4 = 10𝑚𝑘𝑠)
2 3 −5 9 −10 7
3) Given the matrices 𝐴 = ( 1 2 −1) and 𝐵 = (−4 5 −3).
−1 −1 5 1 −1 1
a. Show that 𝐴 is non-singular.
b. Find the matrix product 𝐴𝐵 and 𝐵𝐴. Hence,
2𝑥 + 3𝑦 − 5𝑧 = 4
c. Deduce the inverse of 𝐴 and solve the system { 𝑥 + 2𝑦 − 𝑧 = 0 .
−𝑥 − 𝑦 + 5𝑧 = −5
(2 + 4 + 4 = 10𝑚𝑘𝑠)
4 11 5 3 4 −2
4) Let 𝐴 = (1 4 2) and 𝐵 = (2 −1 −5).
1 2 1 3 −4 1
a. Find the matrix 𝐶 such that 𝐴 − 2𝐶 = 𝐵.
b. Find the product 𝐴𝐵 and show that its determinant is −121.
c. Find the multiplicative inverse of 𝐴, 𝐴−1.
(2 + 4 + 4 = 10𝑚𝑘𝑠)
5) Prove the following trigonometric identities, clearly showing all the steps;
𝜋
tan( −𝑥) sec(𝜋−𝑥) sin(−𝑥) sin 𝐴 sin 2𝐴+sin 3𝐴 sin 6𝐴
2
i. 𝜋 =1 iii. = tan 5𝐴
sin(𝜋+𝑥) cot(2𝜋−𝑥) csc( −𝑥) sin 𝐴 cos 2𝐴+sin 3𝐴 cos 6𝐴

BONUS QUESTIONS:(6𝑚𝑘𝑠)

Transform the following parametric equations into cartesian form.

a) 𝑥 = 1 − cos 2𝜃 and 𝑦 = sin 2𝜃.

b) 𝑥 = 1 + csc 𝑡 and 𝑦 = 3 − cos 𝑡.
c) Find the value(s) of 𝑥 for which 7(52𝑥+1 ) + 4(5𝑥+1 ) − 15 = 0 (leaving your answer(s) correct to 2
decimal places).

(2 + 2 + 2 = 6𝑚𝑘𝑠)

The end!

Go back and check your work.

Good luck!!!
