Introduction: -
Small enclosures, detailed within this system manual, include electrical enclosures (Distribution,
Control, Communication, Servers), CNC machines, Wind Turbines etc. Such enclosures can
present a particular problem where faulty equipment and/or damaged wiring increase the risk of a
fire. It can sometimes be difficult to identify when there is a fire in an enclosed volume until it is too
late to take action, especially in well-sealed enclosures where there would be limited egress of
combustion products / heat from the enclosures. Firetrex provides protection inside the enclosure
and discharges at the heart of the fire giving a surety that the fire will be extinguished. A particularly
important characteristic of Firetrex DLP systems is that they stop migration of fire from the enclosure
where fire starts to neighbouring enclosures, reducing significantly consequential losses and
disruption. These pre-engineered systems have many advantageous features, including:
• Automatic actuation.

o Low pressure (Health)
o Discharge Confirmation
• Reduced possibility of damage and leakage.
2.0 PRINCIPLES OF OPERATION
Upon Flame impingement or high
ambient temperature, the
pressurised detection tube,
connected to a cylinder
containing the extinguishing
agent, ruptures with a burst at
the hottest point. The agent is
then discharged through the
burst hole at the heart of the fire.
Since the discharge of the agent
is from the point of burst and into
the vicinity of the fire/high ambient
temperature

4. SYSTEM INSTALLATION AND COMMISSIONING
4.1. WARNINGS
1. During Handling, assembling, filling, transport and until commissioning of the system:
• All cylinder ball valves must remain closed.
• Valve lever locking screws must be fitted (where applicable).
2. Never open the cylinder ball valve unless:
• Detection Tube has been pressurised to the correct filling pressure and monitored
for leakage.
• Cylinder is secure / fixed.
• All detection tube secure / fixed.
Unintended opening of the ball valve (s) will result in premature system discharge with risk
of injury and damage.
3. Under no circumstances should any attempt be made to remove components from
pressurised systems.
4.2. Detection tube cutting and fitting
Use Tube Cutter to cut detection tube at 90º +/- 5° to its axis. The tube end should be
cleaned and any swarf / burr removed using the deburring tool. The tube can then be
assembled with any of the detection tube fittings.
Detection tube cutter Detection Tube Deburring Tool
detection tube fixings can be utilised to secure the tubing (6mm od), providing they fulfil the
following necessary functions:
• They must not damage or degrade the tubing under vibration conditions
• They must secure the tube fully, including most importantly during system discharge.
• They must be manufactured of materials compatible with the environment in which they
are installed.

4.3. Detection Tube Installation
The detection tube is to be placed above the fire risk. It is vital to the effectiveness of the
system that caution is taken in the positioning and securing of the detection tube, as the
tube acts as a linear heat detector
WARNING:
• Make sure detection tube and fittings are correctly assembled.
• Do not bend, crush or kink the tubing, as this may result in an ineffective discharge.
• Do not install detection tubing onto any surface where the temperature is outside the
optimal long term temperature limits of the tube, as this may cause premature
activations.
• The greater the distance between the fire source and the detection tube, the longer the
reaction time.
• Installation should be carried out so that during any maintenance operations
(movement of adjacent components etc.) damage to the detection tube does not occur.
Damage to the tube can often be seen by a loss of colour (stress whitening) caused by a
break point or damage, particularly on a bend. This does not necessarily mean that there
will be an immediate pressure loss, but it could cause a burst of the tube without a fire or
heat actuation. The minimum bend radius is 100mm,
4.4. General Installation Instructions – All Systems
When system is delivered, the cylinder will be pre-charged with Novec 1230/FK-5-1-12 Fire
Protection Fluid and the cylinder will already be pressurised.
Installation of a system should be in accordance with the following sequence:
• Check against labelled weight of system on side of cylinder and record for inclusion on
Maintenance Label.
• Install Cylinder as appropriate, with suitable strength fixings. Suitability of fixings will
depend upon the cylinder mounting arrangements. Note: Cylinders must be vertically
mounted.
• Install system detection tube with particular reference to ensuring in accordance with the
limits in the system manual.
• After installation of the detection tube and before opening the cylinder ball valve,
pressurise all the detection tube.
• Inspect tubing for obvious signs of leak.
• When, after an appropriate monitoring time, it is confirmed all the detection tube is leak
tight and maintaining pressure, as required, open the cylinder ball valve(s). Equalisation
between the cylinder and detection tube pressures will take place. A slight passage of gas
may occur. This is entirely normal.

4.5. Installation Check
Installation records of all FIRETREX systems must be kept for audit purposes.
Once the system is operational, the responsible person should be instructed on the
functions of the FIRETREX system; especially the instructions for actions in case of a
fire or a fault.
As part of the general supervisory obligation the responsible person is required to
perform staff awareness training for the system.
5. SYSTEM MAINTENANCE & SERVICE
5.1. Visual inspection by the responsible person
The responsible person should carry out visual inspections of all FIRETREX systems
regularly. These visual inspections should be carried out at least monthly. When
circumstances require, inspections should be carried out more frequently.
When carrying out these visual inspections, it should be ensured that:
The operating instructions of each system are clean and legible.
The valves on each system are open.
Each system has not been operated and is not obviously damaged or has any missing
parts.
The reading of any pressure gauge or indicator fitted to a system is within operational
and safety limits.
The locking screw (where applicable) of each system cylinder is not broken or missing.
The equipment has not been moved or changed, since initial installation of the
FIRETREX system.
The responsible person should record the results of these visual inspections and arrange
for corrective action, where necessary, by a competent person. In the event of doubt, the
responsible person should arrange for a competent person to examine the system.
NOTE 1 - Responsible persons have obligations under fire legislation to use a competent
person to maintain extinguishing equipment in an efficient state, in efficient working order
and in good repair, where it is necessary to provide such equipment to safeguard
employees in the event of fire.
5.2. Evaluation of fitness for service of systems and actions to be taken

designated place, and marked “CONDEMNED”, together with the reason for this
assessment. The responsible person should be advised in the written report that a
permanent replacement is needed as soon as possible. Evaluation of whether the damage,
wear or corrosion a system has undergone, make it unsafe for use or unfit for service,
depends on the judgement of the competent person. The competent person should have
training and experience with the particular model of system.
The following conditions do not affect the function or safety of a system and will not
therefore require the system to be condemned:
Staining or discoloration of diptubes
External blemishes or slight scratches;
Light rusting of parts which is not likely to impair function or safety;
5.2.2.2. Conditions indicating that a system is unsafe for use
Potentially the most serious hazard presented by a defective system is the sudden
uncontrolled release of pressure or ejection of parts. This could be caused by any of the
following conditions:
Corrosion, wear or damage to threads of any pressure retaining part;
Corrosion or wear of the detection tube and fittings.
Corrosion of welds;
Extensive general corrosion or severe pitting;
Dents or gouges in the cylinder;
Fire damage to the cylinder, cylinder fittings, detection tube and tube fittings;
Internal or external corrosion of the cylinder body.
Additional reasons for condemning a system include the following (unless rectified by the
replacement of the appropriate components):
1) Over painting or application of any other coating, film or colouring to any plastics
component that could be subject to pressure;
2) UV degradation of plastics components such as detection tubing;
