GENERATIVE AI
Abstract:
Generative AI refers to a class of artificial intelligence models that can create
new content such as text, images, music, and more by learning from existing data.
This technology leverages deep learning techniques, particularly generative
adversarial networks (GANs) and transformer architectures, to produce high-
quality outputs that mimic human creativity. The applications of generative AI
span diverse fields, including entertainment, art, healthcare, and education,
raising both exciting opportunities and ethical challenges. Issues such as content
authenticity, intellectual property rights, and potential misuse highlight the need
for responsible deployment and regulation. the current advancements in
generative AI, its transformative potential across industries, and the ethical
considerations that accompany its use, emphasizing the importance of a balanced
approach to harnessing this powerful technology. The widespread diffusion of
this technology with examples such as Dall-E 2, GPT-4, and Copilot is currently
revolutionizing the way we work and communicate with each other, we provide a
conceptualization of generative AI as an entity in socio-technical systems and
provide examples of models, systems, and applications. Based on that, we
introduce limitations of current generative AI and provide an agenda for Business
& Information Systems Engineering (BISE) research. Different from previous
works, we focus on generative AI in the context of information systems, and, to
this end, we discuss several opportunities and challenges that are unique to the
BISE community and make suggestions for impactful directions for BISE
research.
