Ecological Footprints
Survey and Discussion Worksheet
Student Name: Kanauria C
Pre-Activity Question:
In your own words, describe how ecological footprint, biocapacity, and overshoot are connected to each other.
Ecological footprint is the demand of water and land resources. Biocapacity is the ecosystem's capacity to
produce resources and when it is exceeded, overshoot happens.
Survey Instructions:
1. Go to the Footprint Calculator website: https://www.footprintcalculator.org/home/en
2. Complete the "What is your ecological footprint?" questionnaire by selecting "Take the First Step."
3. When you reach the end of the questionnaire, record your overshoot day and the number of Earths we
would need if everyone lived as you do in your lab worksheet.
4. Select "See Details" below the approximate number of Earths, or select the "Results Part 2" tab at the
top, to get to the detailed results page.
5. Complete the data tables in your lab worksheet. You can get the details by moving your cursor over each
part of the pie chart and bar graph on the results page. It will give you the values you need in global
hectares (gha).
6. Select "Solutions to #MOVETHEDATE" and read through the five solutions offered to reduce your
ecological footprint.
7. Answer the analysis and making connection questions in the worksheet about your experience.

Discussion Instructions:
1. You will write about your ecological footprint survey and data experience.
2. Write a two-paragraph reflection based on questions in this worksheet.
3. Post your reflection as a new message in the discussion group area.
4. Read a classmate's reflection post and reply with a thoughtful response comparing your experiences.
5. Copy and paste your reply to this worksheet.
6. Answer the three connection questions using complete sentences.
7. Submit this worksheet for grading.
Reflection Post:
Write a two-paragraph (3–5 sentences each) reflection to answer the following questions:
a) How many Earths do we need if everyone lives like you?
b) What is your Overshoot Day? What does this day mean?
c) Examine the "Results Part 2" Tab. What percentage of your ecological footprint was due to carbon?
What is one change you can make that would reduce your carbon output?
d) What were your feelings as you learned about your ecological footprint?
e) What solution(s) can you commit to doing now or in the near future?
Write your reflection paragraphs here, then copy it into a discussion post for your classmates.
If everyone was to live like me, we would need 2 earths to survive. My overshoot day is 03. Apr which means that all of
our resources that nature can renew in a year will be consumed by this date. 55% of my ecological footprint was due to
carbon. I can try driving less and biking more. I was surprised and disappointed as I learned about my ecological footprint.
I can try committing to
Discussion Reply:
Reply to another student's post. What similarities and differences did you have? What did you find interesting or
learn while reading the reflection.
Copy your reply and paste it here. Include the name of the student you replied to and the date you replied.
