Mail Art
Mail Art or Postal Art is a worldwide art movement that involves decorating
envelopes and parcels and sending them through international postal services. Some mail
artists believe that mail art began in ancient times when Cleopatra had herself delivered to
Julius Caesar in a rolled-up carpet while others consider the origin of the movement to be
early avant-garde artists’ experiments with the postal system.
Whatever its beginnings, contemporary mail art dates back to the 1960s when New
York based artist Ray Johnson encouraged the free exchange of postal messages between
artists and the public with his New York Correspondence School. Johnson’s first mail art
consisted of letters, drawings, doodles and rubber-stamped messages that he sent to
friends and acquaintances through the post, setting a trend other artists would soon follow.
In 1970, the first important public exhibition of mail art was organised at the Whitney
Museum in New York featuring 107 pieces sent by participants to the curator of the
museum.
In the 1970s and 1980s a growing number of artists around the world became
dissatisfied with the commercial art gallery system and decided to start exhibiting their work
through the international postal system. Artists also organised exhibitions in private
locations such as apartments, remote locations and venues that would not usually contain
art, as well as the usual museums and galleries.
A mail art show has no entrance fee, all works are exhibited and there are no
judges. In fact, the movement’s absence of hierarchy and the fact that it is open to everyone
sets it apart from other art movements. Everyone can participate in mail art and there is no
censorship. The mail art movement aims to break down barriers between people and bring
out their creative side; it establishes contact between artists and the public all over the
world that allows the artists to exhibit their work outside the traditional venues and
institutions.
Many artists draw, sketch or paint on envelopes and postcards while others emboss
or stitch on them. The written word is used as an art form, as well as for personal letters
and notes sent with artwork and recordings of poetry and prose. Xerography and
photocopying are also commonly used by mail artists to distribute their work, although
black-and-white copies are considered dull or impersonal. A mail artist usually has
hundreds of correspondents around the world with a smaller core circle of favourites.
Following a peak in popularity in the late 1980s and early 1990s, mail art has
adopted many new web-related tools and transformed into a popular online movement. It is
now considered standard for mail artists to display their work on blog sites, websites or
even social networking sites. Mail art projects are also conducted online now and
participants submit their work digitally by email rather than through the post. The mail art
