EE 304 – Microelectronic Circuits

Dr. Ahmed Oteafy

Assignment 4 Due Thursday, April 18th

Reminder: Use 4 significant figures for all calculations.

Problem 1 5 pts
For a common emitter amplifier find the circuit parameters 𝑟𝜋 , 𝑔𝑚 , 𝑟𝑜 and 𝐴0
at a DC bias current 𝐼𝐶1 = 2.5 mA and again at 𝐼𝐶2 = 5 mA In both cases,
𝛽 = 100, 𝑉𝐴 = 50, and 𝑉𝑇 = 25.3 mV.

Problem 2 5 pts
μA
An NMOS transistor has 𝑘𝑛′ = 200 and 𝑉𝐴 = 30 V, find the necessary aspect
V2
ratio so that 𝐴0 = 70 V/V , when it is biased with 𝐼𝐷 = 0.5 mA.

Problem 3 10 pts
For the basic NMOS gain cell with a current-mirror source (PMOS’s) and a
supply of 𝑉𝐷𝐷 = 5 V, find the small signal gain 𝐴𝑣𝑜 and output large signal
limits 𝑣𝑂𝐴 and 𝑣𝑂𝐵 . The NMOS Q1 has 𝑘𝑛′ = 0.3 mA⁄V 2 , (𝑊 ⁄𝐿)1 = 10,
𝑉𝐴𝑛 = 30 V, and the PMOS’s Q2 & Q3 have 𝑘𝑝′ = 0.1 mA⁄V 2 , (𝑊 ⁄𝐿)2,3 = 20,
|𝑉𝐴𝑝 | = 25 V. Assume 𝐼𝐷2 ≈ 𝐼𝐷3 = 𝐼𝑅𝐸𝐹 = 1 mA.

Problem 4 15 pts
A Cascode amplifier (See Fig. 6.9 a in the text) has Q1 & Q2 matched, both with
𝑔𝑚 = 1 mA/V, 𝑘𝑛′ = 0.4 mA/V 2 , 𝑉𝑡𝑛 = 0.5 V, 𝑉𝑂𝑉 = 0.2 V, and the output
resistance must be 𝑅𝑜 = 400 kΩ.
𝑊
a) Find 𝑟𝑜 , 𝑉𝐴 , , 𝐼 = 𝐼𝐷1 = 𝐼𝐷2 .
𝐿
b) Find 𝑣𝑂𝑚𝑖𝑛 .
c) Find 𝑉𝐼 = 𝑉𝐺1 , and 𝑉𝐺2 , to allow for a maximum possible negative swing for
the small signal 𝑣𝑜 , i.e., at 𝑣𝑂𝑚𝑖𝑛 .
Problem 5 10 pts
a) Solve problem 6.38 in the text
b) Determine whether Q4 is a current source or a current sink.
