DEEPER VOICE?
The voice is one of the advanced features that
humans posses. We as humans are capable of
transmuting thoughts into meaningful words that
make up our language via the voice, adding to that
a hint of emotion or intent your words can set the
tone of the conversation in many directions.
The word can mean the world for someone and
can create your own reality.
But is it possible to obtain a deeper voice past
puberty and how?
The answer is yes and via the means of training the
voice (specific exercises). Having a deep(er) voice
plays into your advantage as a deep voice

expresses more dominance and it makes you
appear more attractive to the opposite sex.
The aim is to reclaim your natural voice and
express your authentic self.
Expression starts with the voice so why not start
training the vocal cords and make that a new part
of your morning routine.
How to deepen your voice?
The voice matures during puberty because of a rise
in growth hormone, DHT and testosterone. These
hormones will thicken the vocal cords, and will
make the voice sound deep.
Men who were exposed to large amounts of DHT
during puberty, are likely to have a deeper voice in
adulthood.

However, not all men have had this surge in DHT,
neither is everyone the same in having a deep
voice.
The voice can be naturally made more deep via
following exercises.
RULES BEFORE YOU START
1. The vocal cords can be damaged easily, so
whenever you observe pain, stop immediately.
2. Don’t overdo an exercise and drink enough
water.
3. Training is best done in the morning.

DEEPER VOICE BASICS
The air that you inhale and then exhale is ultimately what
forms your voice and carries your voice. For that reason,
the way you breathe matters.
BREATHING
1) Breathe through the nose and not through the mouth.
Breathing through the mouth is an indication of a
stressed physiology.
2) The correct way of breathing is by breathing through
your diaphragm. This means that when you inhale, the
diaphragm contracts and moves downward to fill the
lungs with air. This is also called belly breathing as the
gut will be pushed forward by the diaphragm.
3) To make room for the lungs, the ribcage should
expand a little bit as well. If you feel that your ribcage is
compromised, then look up some video’s how you can
release the tension (myofacia releases) to free up the
ribcage.

EXERCISE 1. THE HUM
The first exercises is best done first thing in the morning.
Begin with warming up the vocal cords first and do the
exercise next. Note that overdoing these exercises could
potentially harm to vocal cords, so start slow and don’t
overdo the following exercises.
Aim to practice these exercises 4 to 5 times a week.
Step 1. Warming Up
- Have a sip of water
- Yawn repeatedly for about 30 - 60 seconds
- Make sure to yawn slowly & that you are relaxed
This exercise will make the vocal cords more loose so
that they can vibrate at a lower frequency.

Step 2. Morning Humming
The best time to exercise the voice is in the morning.
The voice is deeper in the mornings because all muscles
are relaxed.
Start humming after the warm up to set the tone for the
day. Take a deep breath (diaphragm) and hum.
Do this repeatedly for a few times while you focus on
humming from deep down to create a deep hum.

Step 3. Head Raising Hum
After you have done the initial hums, you can try
humming while raising the head. This will stretch and
strengthen the vocal cords leading to the production of
a deeper tone/voice.
Do this exercise 5 times in a row and if you can handle,
you can do more. Be careful not to overdo this, as it can
put a serious strain on the vocal cords.
Slow progress is key.

EXERCISE 2. THE GROWL
This is a funny one. Think about how you clean your
throat, there is a rattling of your vocal cords.
This growl or rattling is what you want to practice. Start
with growling throughout the day and advance by going
a pitch lower.

EXERCISE 3. STRETCHES
Training and stretching the neck has many benefits
regarding neck pain prevention, overall strength and
aesthetics.
Regarding the depth of voice, we already covered that
the length of the vocal cords plays a role in the depth of
the voice. This means that stretching the neck will also
help stretch the vocal cords in some way. Implement
these stretches 4-5 times a week.
Neck Stretches & Mobility:
• Stretch the front of the neck by doing
neck extensions. This is perhaps one of
the most important stretches for your
neck as many people suffer from a tight
anterior chain.

• Another important stretch is to
stretch the levator scapulae, a
muscle that connects the scapula
and the neck. This can be done be
grabbing the back of a chair with
the hand of the side you want to
stretch and then assisting with the
other hand a 45° stretch (front/
look down).
• Lateral stretches are useful for tight traps. However,
it has been mine experience that myofascial releases
work better in loosening this muscle more than
stretches alone.

Posture and Voice
Your posture and the position of your head will not only
communicate your body language to the outside world,
it will also determine the depth of your voice.
Posterior neck training (extensions), anterior stretches
together with strengthening the back will lead to a
normal and healthy posture.

DEEPER VOICE EXTRA
Some men have noticed, myself included, that the voice
becomes deeper after smoking cigars for several weeks.
Now I don’t recommend you to start smoking, but I can
say that cigars increase DHT which potentially could
effect the vocal cords and thus the voice.
The amount of cigars varies from 1 to 2 per week.
