This is an overview of the Japanese invasion of the Philippines.

The Japanese occupation lasted for more
than 3 years, which started on January 3,
1942, a day after the occupation of
Manila.
The Japanese director
general oversaw the
political, economic, and
cultural affairs in the
Philippines.
They issued several directives
to the Japanese Military
Administration for the
Filipino people’s strict
compliance.

To prevent Filipinos from being
informed of American activities, they
made some orders such as:
• Declared martial law in Manila
• Imposed curfew and blackout
• All firearms and ammunition were
confiscated.

A Japanese-designed government to be composed of prominent Filipinos.
The Mayor of the City of Manila,
Jorge B. Vargas was ordered to organize
an administrative commission.

On January 23, 1942, Mayor Vargas
responded that they were ready to
obey the orders of the Japanese army
for “the maintenance of peace and
order, and promotion of the well-
being of our own people.”

Japanese Army.
