Learning Module in Human Computer Interaction
ACTIVITY 6 – Implementation, Evaluation and User Support
Exercises/Drills:
Perform our class activities for this lesson via our learning group using the class
code given to your section at the beginning of this semester.
Evaluation:
Directions: Answer the following questions briefly and submit your answer via our
learning group.
1. Write a manual page for making a cup of coffee. Assume your user has no
experience but will recognize a cup, a kettle, a spoon, etc. Swap your manual
with a partner. Does our partner’s manual give you sufficient instruction to make
the cup of coffee? Discuss improvements with your partner and agree on a final
version of the manual.
How to Make a Cup of Coffee.
Materials and Tools Needed
• Coffee
• Kettle
• Water
• Cup or mug
• Spoon
• Sugar
• Milk or creamer
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Fill the Kettle
Take your kettle and fill it with water. Make sure not to overfill, aim for about
half to three-quarters full, depending on how much coffee you need.
2. Boil the Water
Place the kettle on its base, if the kettle is electric, or on the stove. Turn the
kettle on, or turn on the stove burner if using a pot. Wait until the water boils.
3. Prepare the Cup
While the water boils, place a clean cup or mug on the counter.
4. Add Coffee to the Cup
Add ½ teaspoon of instant coffee powder into the cup and adjust based on how
strong you like your coffee
5. Add Sugar
If you like your coffee sweet, add 1 to 2 teaspoons of sugar. Stir the coffee and
sugar powder together gently.
6. Pour the Boiling Water
Once the water has boiled, carefully pour it into the cup. Leave a little space at
the top for milk or creamer if desired.
7. Stir
Use a spoon to stir the coffee until the coffee powder and sugar, if used, is fully
dissolved.
8. Add Milk or Creamer
If you prefer your coffee with milk or creamer, pour a small amount into the
cup. Stir again.
9. Enjoy Your Coffee
Allow the coffee to cool slightly, and then enjoy! Be careful, it might be hot.
Discussion & Review with my Partner
Since our procedure are similar, it looks like we are both enjoying the same taste
of coffee.
2. Find a computer application that you have never used before. Attempt to learn
to use it using only the online support. Is there enough information to allow you
to use the application effectively? Is the information easy to find? What
improvements (if any) would you suggest?
I have attempted to use GIMP, which is an open-source picture editor, for the
first time. For learning it, I relied solely on web support provided by them on
their website and their forums. Online support offered details very
overwhelming at first but very thorough. I was able to learn how to crop, resize,
and change the color for basic operations, but it really took a lot of time to get
used to the interface because GIMP is very complex. Some tutorials just
assumed that something I had no clue about was photo editing knowledge itself,
so certain features were rather hard to follow. However, after considerable
patience and hitting a few wrong keys, I managed to get familiar with some of
the most important tools.
The support was generally good for me, but I can see how it could be
strengthened in certain areas with online support. Documentation really needs
to be better organized by skill level so you can clearly track a path of knowledge,
whether you are for beginners, intermediate, or advanced users. Video step-by-
step and interactive tutorials with added visual support help make the learning
process smooth. Also, some kind of “quick start guide” that discusses common
operations would have been a great bonus for the new users to get started faster.
Summing it all up, the information was there, it just needed to be easier to find
as well as more user-friendly for those being initiated.
