VIET NAM: MAKING EDUCATION MORE INCLUSIVE
https://www.globalpartnership.org/blog/viet-nam-making-education-more-inclusive
In Vietnam, too many children from ethnic minorities do not progress through the education
system because early learning does not take place in their mother tongue. Read how GPE and The
Nippon Foundation are supporting the country to make education more inclusive.
“Are there ethnic minorities who speak different languages in your country?", the translator
whispers in my ear while I look back at the curious 13-year-old boy who had originally posed his
question to me in Vietnamese. “Yes, as a matter of fact, there are,” I respond while reflecting on my
own country of Venezuela, where we have a minority of indigenous populations that speak languages
besides Spanish.
His question came after he described to me the challenges that some of his classmates face
because they speak a language other than Vietnamese at home – a challenge that many multicultural
and multiethnic countries face, and one that is prominent in Viet Nam, which is home to 54 ethnic
groups with 90 languages and multiple dialects.
D. The country has high primary school completion rates
7. According to the passage, ethnic minorities ______________.
A. Represent 14% of Vietnam's population and make up 50% of the poor

8. The phrase “standardized language of instruction” in paragraph 5 could be replaced by
______________.
A. The common language used in education B. A complex language for learning

9. What is NOT true about ethnic people, according to the passage?
A. They make up 14% of Vietnam's population
B. They are fully supported in the education system
C. They account for 73% of the poor
D. They speak languages other than Vietnamese at home
10. Which of the sentences below expresses the education challenges for ethnic minorities in
Vietnam?
A. Ethnic minorities have lower completion rates because they cannot afford school.
B. Ethnic minorities in Vietnam struggle due to the instruction in a language other than their mother
tongue.

SUMMER
The small bright lawn stretched away smoothly to the big bright sea. The turf was hemmed with
an edge of scarlet geranium and coleus, and cast-iron vases painted in chocolate colour, standing at
intervals along the winding path that led to the sea, looped their garlands of petunia and ivy geranium
above the neatly raked gravel.
0.F
PARAGRAPH 1
A number of ladies in summer dresses and gentlemen in grey frock-coats and tall hats stood on
the lawn or sat upon the benches. Every now and then, a slender girl in starched muslin would step
from the tent, bow in hand, and speed her shaft at one of the targets, while the spectators interrupted
their talk to watch the result.
1. D
PARAGRAPH 2
The Newport Archery Club always held its August meeting at the Beauforts’. The sport, which
had hitherto known no rival but croquet, was beginning to be discarded in favour of lawn-tennis.
However, the latter game was still considered too rough and inelegant for social occasions, and as an
opportunity to show off pretty dresses and graceful attitudes, the bow and arrow held their own.
2. E
PARAGRAPH 3
In New York, during the previous winter, after he and May had settled down in the new
greenish-yellow house with the bow-window and the Pompeian vestibule, he had dropped back with
Page 7 of 14
relief into the old routine of the office. The renewal of this daily activity had served as a link with his
former self.
3. B
PARAGRAPH 4
At the Century he had found Winsett again, and at the Knickerbocker, the fashionable young
men of his own set. And what with the hours dedicated to the law and those given to dining out or
entertaining friends at home, with an occasional evening at the opera or the theatre, the life he was
living had still seemed a fairly real and inevitable sort of business.
4. G
PARAGRAPH 5
But the Wellands always went to Newport, where they owned one of the square boxes on the
cliffs, and their son–in–law could adduce no good reason why he and May should not join them there.
As Mrs. Welland rather tartly pointed out, it was hardly worthwhile for May to have worn herself out
trying on summer clothes in Paris if she was not to be allowed to wear them; and this argument was of
a kind to which Archer had as yet found no answer.
5.A
PARAGRAPH 6
It was not May’s fault, poor dear. If, now and then, during their travels, they had fallen slightly
out of step, harmony had been restored by their return to the conditions she was used to. He had always
foreseen that she would not disappoint him; and he had been right. No, the time and place had been
perfect for his marriage.
Archer had married (as most young men did) because he had met a perfectly charming girl at
the moment when a series of rather aimless sentimental adventures were ending in premature disgust;
and she had represented peace, stability, comradeship, and the steadying sense of an inescapable duty.
He could not say that he had been mistaken in his choice, for she had fulfilled all that he had expected.
It was undoubtedly gratifying to be the husband of one of the handsomest and most popular young
married women in New York, especially when she was also one of the sweetest-tempered and most
reasonable of wives; and Archer had never been insensible to such advantages.
A. May herself could not understand his obscure reluctance to fall in with so reasonable and pleasant a
way of spending the summer. She reminded him that he had always liked Newport in his bachelor days,
and as this was indisputable he could only profess that he was sure he was going to like it better than
ever now that they were to be there together. But as he stood on the Beaufort verandah and looked out
on the brightly peopled lawn, it came home to him with a shiver that he was not going to like it at all.
B. In addition, there had been the pleasurable excitement of choosing a showy grey horse for May’s
brougham (the Wellands had given the carriage). Then, there was the abiding occupation and interest of
arranging his new library, which, in spite of family doubts and disapprovals, had been carried out as he
had dreamed, with a dark embossed paper, Eastlake book-cases and “sincere” arm–chairs and tables.
C. The next morning Archer scoured the town in vain for more yellow roses. In consequence of this
search, he arrived late at the office, perceived that his doing so made no difference whatever to anyone,
and was filled with sudden exasperation at the elaborate futility of his life. Why should he not be, at the
moment, on the stands on St. Augustine with May Welland?
D. Newland Archer, standing on the verandah of the Beaufort house, looked curiously down upon this
scene. On each side of the shiny painted steps, was a large, blue china flowerpot on a bright yellow
china stand. A spiky green plant filled each pot, and below the verandah ran a wide border of blue
hydrangeas edged with more red geraniums. Behind him, the French windows of the drawing rooms
Page 8 of 14
through which he had passed gave glimpses, between swaying lace curtains, of glassy parquet floors
islanded with chintz poufs, dwarf armchairs, and velvet tables covered with trifles in silver.
E. Archer looked down with wonder at the familiar spectacle. It surprised him that life should be going
on in the old way when his own reactions to it had so completely changed. It was Newport that had first
brought home to him the extent of the change.
F. Half way between the edge of the cliff and the square wooden house (which was also chocolate–
coloured, but with the tin roof of the verandah striped in yellow and brown to represent an awning) two
large targets had been placed against a background of shrubbery. On the other side of the lawn, facing
the targets, was pitched a real tent, with benches and garden-seats about it.
G. Newport, on the other hand, represented the escape from duty into an atmosphere of unmitigated
holiday-making. Archer had tried to persuade May to spend the summer on a remote island off the
coast of Maine (called, appropriately enough, Mount Desert), where a few hardy Bostonians and
Philadelphians were camping in native cottages, and whence came reports of enchanting scenery and a
wild, almost trapper-like existence amid woods and waters.

TASK 2. For questions 6-10, choose from the following A-E the one that best summarizes the main
idea for each paragraph. There is one extra paragraph which you do not need to match. Write your
answers in the corresponding numbered boxes (6-10) on your answer sheet. (5 points)
A. Archer reluctantly joins his wife May and her family in Newport, despite feeling uneasy about
the prospect, realizing that he might not enjoy it.
B. Newland Archer observes a picturesque social gathering of archery in a lavish setting at the
Beaufort house.
C. Archer contrasts the structured life he leads in New York with the carefree holiday atmosphere
of Newport, though he desires a more rugged summer getaway.
D. Despite lawn-tennis becoming more popular, archery remains the preferred sport for social
gatherings, as Archer reflects on how his views have changed over time.
E. Archer finds comfort in returning to his previous life routines after his marriage, settling into his
new home and enjoying domestic pleasures.

Global warming refers to the long-term increase in Earth's average surface temperature due to
human activities, primarily fossil fuel burning, which releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse
gases into the atmosphere. The main result is a change in the climate that can alter weather patterns
worldwide, causing some areas to experience more severe weather conditions.
One of the most visible effects of global warming is the melting of ice caps and glaciers. This
not only raises sea levels, potentially flooding coastal regions, but also leads to a loss of habitat for
wildlife dependent on icy environments. Furthermore, higher temperatures contribute to more intense
Page 10 of 14
and frequent heatwaves and droughts, which can devastate crops, reduce water supplies, and increase
wildfires.
Another significant impact of global warming is on the world’s oceans. As temperatures rise,
oceans warm and expand, which contributes further to sea level rise. Additionally, increased levels of
carbon dioxide cause the oceans to become more acidic, which harms marine life, particularly shellfish
and coral reefs.
Efforts to combat global warming include international agreements like the Paris Agreement,
where countries commit to reducing greenhouse gas emissions to limit temperature rise. Renewable
energy sources such as wind, solar, and hydroelectric power are also being developed and utilized more
widely to replace the burning of fossil fuels.
The fight against global warming requires global cooperation and significant changes in how we
produce and use energy. It's not just an environmental issue but also a matter of economic and social
importance.
