Assignment 2

(Due date 4 Nov 24)

Note: -
1. Draw a schematic diagram if possible.
2. Clearly state all the assumptions for each problem.
3. Write an equation/formula for a given problem then solve it stepwise.
4. Do not copy assignments from others (zero marks for the copied assignments).
5. Sign convention and variable notation are the same as discussed in the class

Q1. For a stage of an axial-flow turbine, the axial velocity is constant throughout
the stage and is equal to 175 m/s. The airflow leaving the stator makes a flow angle
of 64°. The reaction of the stage is R = 0.5, and the blade speed is u = 140 m/s.
Find the following
a. Draw velocity diagram
b. Determine the remaining velocities and angles of the velocity triangle
c. Determine the flow angle of the absolute velocity (𝛼1 ) entering the stator.

Q2. Determine the rotational speed (in rpm) of the shaft of the centrifugal pump which is
pumping water at the flow rate of 22 L/s. At the impeller exit; the radius of the blade is r2 = 7.7
cm; the width of the blade is b2 = 0.8 cm; the flow angle is α2 = 67° and the blade angle is β2 =
−40°.

Q3. Determine the degree of the reaction of an axial-flow turbine in which the axial velocity is
constant and equal to the blade speed. At the rotor exit, the flow angle is 0° and the axial
component of airflow leaving the rotor is 140 m/s, and. The inlet flow angle to the rotor is α2
= 60°. Also, determine the blade angles at the rotor inlet and outlet.
Note: there are more than 1 velocity triangles possible in this problem. But only 1 velocity
triangle is correct. Think accordingly
